We don't know exactly how they calculate it since they only show us the last 25 in the statistics.
Perhaps they should post the date of the high score.
If it is as popular as I think it is, they will soon add more statistics.

Very Very Interesting article Merlin! Only thing I know is I am never raising my score from 27. I did good right from the first day it came out and hit my high (27) on the 3rd day of its existence, I have since tried well over 600 times and I have counted 8 times I hit 1st 22 in a row and had 3 minutes to go and then the "SUPER GM" Tactics come out! I say there is no Incentive to keep trying ![]()

Don't fret. It's only 50 hours of your life so far.
/ There are probably 12-step programs.

Thanks mate. Yeah it does feel like there should be more incentive. Maybe implementing this extra bit of information isn't enough, but at least I think it would be a step in the right direction. A slight improvement.
Playing for the purpose of improving your top score, at least for me, does get boring in puzzle rush. Since the possible number of results is so small, we get the same scores many many times. Personally that does make the scoring seem very dull.
I do like the inclusion of the average score tho. Just seems like it would be more interesting to have a smaller number of attempts in the calculation. Perhaps even just use a range of dates, like average over the past week and month. Being shown some of these details in the puzzle rush interface after the run would be more convenient, so there is no need to go to the stats section for puzzle rush on your profile unless you want extreme details.
If you regularly get to the 5-minute end then you are a superior player. I almost always get 3 strikes.
Not sure how the puzzle rush average score was calculated when the previous posts were made (about a year ago), but as of today (4 Jan 2020), I can tell you that it appears to be the average of the last 10 attempts. I calculated it from my list of scores and also after I’d done another and it changed exactly as it should if it was the last 10.
I am wondering how many of your previous attempts are used to calculate the average score?
It seems like it is either all of your attempts since you started playing Puzzle Rush, or an excessively large number.
If this is the case, I'd like to offer the suggestion of introducing a cap to the calculation. Only use the last 50 - 100 attempts to determine the average score. This gives you a better idea of what your current level is in puzzle rush. Makes it easier to see when you perform better or worse on average.
Personally, 50 attempts seems large enough. After 50 attempts, where you do not strike out, you have already played for a large amount of time (50 * 5 min). This should be a sufficiently large pool of data to measure current performance. Once you get to 100 this is already larger then you really need. Anything past that is excessive. Polluting the result with outdated attempts just reduces the accuracy of the calculation.
Even providing more average scores to look at, like average from last 10, 20 or 30 attempts, could be a nice addition. Would be a less consistent measurement of current performance then the 50 attempts average score, but would be a number that gets rid of outdated results more quickly and fluctuates more noticeably. It would also be nice to be able to see these averages within the Puzzle Rush interface rather then having to go to your profile. Still that would just be a convenience feature.
If there is a counter point to this suggestion then I would be interested to hear it. Otherwise I hope this is something that can be considered. If you made it to the end of this post then thank you for taking the time to read it.
