Quit pushing the Membership

I agree with other posts that I have seen that you push the premium membership waaaay to hard. For instance, you let me select piece style and try to save before telling me it's for members only.

You should change your whole business model away from selling crap, it makes people mad; especially online.

Why not go to an Ad based system like google? There are lots of free chess sites, don't be the pushy car salesman site.

TheGrobe

Business that don't sell anything don't typically fare well.

How many of the ads on this site to you click on?  Ad revenue alone can't support this site.  Google can pull it off because they own the ad market.

Also, keep in mind that what you're complaining about is exactly what you're suggesting this site should focus on:  Advertising.  It just happens that in this case they're advertising their own product.

bluespiano

Quit whining.  You are playing FOR FREE.  You're an adult.  If you don't  like it, go somewhere else to play.

haha

i think it would be so rad if chess.com let you write a post and right after you click submit you got a message that said something to the effect of--thank you for you thoughts but until you pay a small fee, no one will be able to read what you've typed.  i wonder how many freeloaders would keep typing stuff only to curse themselves everytime they click submit

dude, manic, i would just talk to erik for you.

blah blah blah I want free stuff blah blah blah.

It requires a mindset change. To loosely borrow from JFK, the entitlement generation thinks they are doing the website a favor by coming, and that more should be free. In reality, the website is doing them a favor by giving out an incredible product for free.

Raweyes

Well, OP, you have now 10 posts after your own and none of them agrees with what you have said. What better clue you need to just pretend you never said anything, hmmm?

bigpoison

The entitlement generation?  Oh, man, you sure are depressing today.

well said, i might ad that if this site makes people "mad"  they are free to leave.  Also one is free to not buy a premium membership...

in the meantime--complain, it's free

Do you have any idea what it takes, manpower and moneywise to run a website such as this one? Perhaps if you did have an idea you would appreciate the incredible service we already get FREE OF CHARGE.

What I don't like is that when my membership came up to renew you didn't ask me if I wanted to renew, you just renewed me automatically and charge my master card without permission.

TheGrobe

When you signed up you were informed that the renewal was automatic unless you cancelled it.

That may be but I don't remember that from a year ago. I see it as a way to force a renewal without permission.I don't keep a file on everything I do.

TheGrobe

Yeah, it would probably be good to send you an alert two weeks or a month ahead of time so that you know the renewal is coming, but the fact remains that you were forewarned so it's not exactly without permission.

Kernicterus

I found renewal convenient.

Anyway...I can see why the OP would be irritated that instead of being told "these pieces or boards are for premium", he's given the option to select them and then told that they are premium only...upgrade or else.  It's like getting your hand slapped while picking up something.

If I had a great memory I could possibly be a Grandmaster! Since I don't have a great memory I need them to alert me ahead of time. It's a just a courtesy they could make available. I'm sure they know that some of us will forget about it and they can make extra money.

I'm not playing for free. I'm a Diamond member, thats not free. It's just a common courtesy.

As a non-paying member (for now, at least), my only complaint is with the trial membership offered upon registering. I never sign up for trials of anything that require my credit card information and then charge me if I don't cancel.  In my opinion, Chess.com would do much better to offer the 30-day trial as a courtesy without the "give us your credit card, and then cancel or pay" trick.
