Yeah, it would probably be good to send you an alert two weeks or a month ahead of time so that you know the renewal is coming, but the fact remains that you were forewarned so it's not exactly without permission.

If I had a great memory I could possibly be a Grandmaster! Since I don't have a great memory I need them to alert me ahead of time. It's a just a courtesy they could make available. I'm sure they know that some of us will forget about it and they can make extra money.

I agree.

Unfortunately, this website is not alone in this line of thinking, and it's basically the accepted way of doing business, unfortunately. It's just not very user-friendly.

As a non-paying member (for now, at least), my only complaint is with the trial membership offered upon registering. I never sign up for trials of anything that require my credit card information and then charge me if I don't cancel.  In my opinion, Chess.com would do much better to offer the 30-day trial as a courtesy without the "give us your credit card, and then cancel or pay" trick.

This would probably reduce the number of people keeping the free trial by 90%

Wow! I opened up a can of worms.

Good! Maybe it's not for them. I doubt if it's 90%.

CoachConradAllison

I think it probably would be.

Macro80

This is truly pathetic.  I happen to think the content on here and the services offered are pretty damn cheap at the price.

Martin_Stahl

While I wouldn't be against being reminded just prior to the renewal it is clearly spelled out when you join and the information is right in your account information (very obvious) so you don't have to remember, other than maybe going in to check it once in awhile.

Sensuinaga

i agree with the poster, but i knew he would get flamed the second i read it....haters

JesusFreakz

This website like all businesses are in business for 1 reason.  To make money.  You like the the rest of us have a choice.  Be a free member, or a paying member.

Captainbob767

My feeling is if you don't like being here and you don't like the rules , take a hike and don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out........Tongue out

PrawnEatsPrawn

This site is pretty good to the punter, even if you "pay in error" they have a "30 Day Money-Back Guarantee w/ no questions asked!"

(Top of page)

So moaning about getting tricked into paying is utter nonsense.

"Despite everything I get for free I hate the way this site does business and anyone who disagrees with me is a hater!"

Um....

What I don't like is that when my membership came up to renew you didn't ask me if I wanted to renew, you just renewed me automatically and charge my master card without permission.

See post #4 here.

Cancel your membership (Do not close your account.) Your privileges remain for the period you paid for. Renew manually when the time comes, if you wish to do so. If you renew, cancel immediately to start the sequence again.

Ha. Nobody gave any good reasons at all.

1. I have been playing for FREE on Yahoo chess, FREE is not special.

2. Ad based systems make money, it is a different approach.

3. You refer to me as a "free loader", GOOD. That means you feel like your paying for me to play. YOU pay fees, for me to pay, but YOU don't want it to change so it's FREE for EVERYONE???? Does an AD in the corner of your screen really make you that mad that you want to pay for services?

ozzie_c_cobblepot

Yahoo! chess is the worst chess site out there. You get what you pay for.

Then by all means feel free to go play at Yahoo! chess, we don't need whiners here.

Horse711

Ya, awesome reason. I'll get 10 more of those, and still ignore it.

The fact is, if there is a better way, they should consider it. Your post adds nothing. Save your time and quit typing.

Furthermore in all their pushing of the premium service, I've never even seen the price listed. If it's "cheap" like others have suggested, they should show how much it is.

It's the way they go about pushing the service. It reminds me of a car salesman.

tkvaughn999

I subscribed and couldn't be happier.  This site has a lot to offer a person who wants to be a better chess player.  Nothing more to say.

PrawnEatsPrawn

I'll post the link (again):

http://www.chess.com/membership.html?c=icon

You can also get there by clicking on "upgrade" (top of screen) or clicking any star, crown or diamond by a user's name.

I'm sure the staff are very sorry for making the price-list so inaccessible. Damn those tricksters!

Why not go to an Ad based system like google? There are lots of free chess sites, don't be the pushy car salesman site.

Um... they do have ads for non-paying members.

I never see them, pop-up blocker must block them.

Furthermore if that is true, all the previous posters should go mind their own business.

"Freeloader", "Do you know how much time it takes to run a website"

Haha. You guys should go cry more, Fanbois. They are in it for money, they are not your friend.
