I noticed that when the ratinsg for online chess are posted after a match, it's the current ratings that are saved, as opposed to the ratings when the game started. So a win could reflect a lower rating if your opponent lost a game or two while your game is in progress, and because you win the game, that win also lowers the opponents' rating, turning a victory or someone perhaps a hundred points higher than you into a win over a more evenly matched oponent, even if it'is just temporary.\

I know it's nota bout 'the ratings', but it kind of is .) it's great to pull off a win over the highest rated player you have ever beaten, and dissapointing to see their rating pulled down due to the win itself.

Yeah, and I'm playing someone who lost over 200 points to timeouts, so I'll get penalised heavily for losing even though he was higher rated when we started.
