Why Is it possible to move your opponents piece on the first move of the game? I always believed that the pieces at the bottom of the board is the side Im playing, not necessarily . In a game last night,I thought I was white,so I played 1.e4...then I noticed that no I was actually assigned the Blk pieces which were at the top of the board! No further moves could be  made after that so I resigned. It seems to me that somehow the board was presented to me upside-down.  My advice to all is  to make sure this doesnt happen to you.BTW  this was the third time this has happened.all on V3.

You can't move your opponent's pieces. Check your settings and make sure you don't have it so that white is always on bottom.

aglitatta

Okay Martin Ill check it thank you.

aglitatta

You were right my setting was white on bottom, made the changes. I did  move 1.e4...last night  although I had the blk pieces. Anyway thanks again. Aglitatta.....

wow, now there is a pay-wall on looking at the board??   I can't do a couple of what-if moves for real?   Is this a bug?

Do you mean when going to analysis mode in a Daily game? You should be able to make moves &c just as before. We've added the ability to save your analysis for Premium members.

If there is one thing that would get me using the new chess.com, it would be to see the v2 screen with my next 12-games in mini-boards, nicely laid out, so I can immediately see which matches are well into the end-game stage.

I'd also like to see something done about the issue that themonkwithnoname has pointed out, whereby I have to re-enter my user name and password when switching between the two versions (although that's fairly minor)

chrka

@Maytin2 Do you mean like this?

If so, you can switch between seeing the games as a list and as miniboards by using the controls at the arrow. (You can also sort the games in different order, such as by Time Left, Most Recent Move, Highest Rating, or Number of Moves).

(That is on https://www.chess.com/daily/games/current, btw.)

A couple of points about navigation.

I mentioned before that vote chess games aren't accessible unless: 1, an alert is posted for the game, or 2, one goes to the "club" that has the vote chess game, then searches for the game. As I mentioned in the previous comment, in V2, I found that all vote chess games one is involved in appear as a list as part of the user home.

About the "alerts." Once one clicks on an alert, the link to that alert is gone forever.

There are several other instances of navigation where certain tricks have to be learned in order to successfully navigate. Part of the problem is that identical pop-ups act differently depending on what page one is on when the pop-up appears. Going into detail would be a bit verbose, but there it is.

And there is weird stuff going on about the html navigation. It seems that every page needs to reload every single item on the page during navigation. My use of this site is based on using this site open in a single browser tab with no other applications running, except the process monitor. Each navigation act pegs the CPU usage to 80% or more, on both cores of a dual-core processor. Switching to a new page takes typically 8 to 15 seconds, and the CPU usage stays pegged sometimes for up to 20 seconds. There's way too much stuff being pushed to the client side, probably most of it unnecessary to the basic function of a chess GUI.

I'm needing to use the search function of the "back" button on the browser as the default navigation tool. That's not clean use of the browser.

But wait, there's more.... :/

Pilchuck

Oh, and I've contacted the staff offering skilled assistance on a volunteer basis. My offer was dismissed.

chrka

@pilchuck While we don't have vote chess games on the Home pages yet, you can find all your vote chess games by going to Vote Chess in the Play menu.

We're constantly working on the performance including decreasing the amount of data, as well as the rendering time.

But it sounds strange that everything should have to be reloaded? A lot of stuff should already be cached in your browser. (On my own system using Safari switching to a new page usually takes less than 1–2s, although it's a bit slower using eg., Firefox. And CPU spikes at about 50–60% on one core.)

Pilchuck

Thanks for that tip on vote chess! That had been very frustrating.

Here are some technical details on what I'm running. I've got a dual-core Intel processor running Windows7, using Firefox as the browser. It's older, for sure. It's a second laptop that I use for portability and leisure stuff that I don't want to access from my main workstation. That also makes it easy to use the computer with only one application running.

I have a suggestion, it seems minor and should be easy to implement. Of the four main menu items, Play, Learn, Share, and Forums, the first three have drop-down menus but the last does not. It would be more consistent, and easier to use, if it did (Hot Topics, Following, etc).

Again, thanks for the reply.

I was not able to move the pieces at all yesterday.   I can now.  Guess it was a glitch/bug.

Maytin2

That's very helpful chrka thank you.

I was considering not renewing my membership when being forced to switch to the updated version. Although I do not play as much as most now, I can honestly say that I have played longer than most at well over 1/2 of a century! You have made improvements as issues came up which is much appreciated! The level & # of players worldwide has gone up ASTRONOMICALLY compared to when I grew up. The number of players & the opportunity to play LARGE # of games is why. Chess.com is fundamental in this regard. I have only ONE BEEF at the moment. That is :- I would like the simple piece board set up used,  liked & preferred by myself to have HOME, TACTICS & GAMES to be with a green background. It is so much more natural & comfortable for me. Blue is like looking into sky. Green is like looking at a lawn or forest. Something more familiar to myself from having spent a lot of time outside working & spending time there over the years. I am not a pilot or stargazer. I believe Chess.com is still the best chess site in the world in spite of & because of it's efforts to do so. Change doesn't come easy or is it always liked by some of us, lets say, more senior members.  Will again renew membership at the basic "Gold" level.                                                                                               CHESS RULES !!!

there is a green/white board and a "nature" theme.   Its all under the settings.

MarkProb

Yes. But not with the simple pieces I prefer. Similar to the daily puzzles they used to have daily in things called news papers in days gone by.This went on for decades & just feels more natural. Simple pieces, with a smaller board just feels more comfortable due to familiarity. A GREEN BACKGROUND would REALLY ( added to simple pieces/smaller board ) MAKE THINGS more relaxed, familiar, comfortable & enjoyable for myself DEFINITELY & POSSIBLY FOR other, lets say, senior players. Is not CHESS a game of patience ?  Right now I'm feeling hard wired.                                                                                                       CHESS RULES !!!

MarkProb

Long Talker Speaking. Just to clarify. I have the simple pieces & desired size board BUT just cannot have a green background with this setup. Have to change pieces to get green background. Prefer old site's pieces as they even simpler & more like newspaper puzzles of old. New sites pieces simple enough. That's just my opinion & you know what they say about opinions. I resemble that remark.   Mark               CHESS RULES!!!
