Vacation and Gametype

1. Vacation status doesn't provide much value and, in fact, isn't really equitable to opponents who aren't on vacation. If someone is unable to finish their move in time they forfeit the game. Period.  This provides incentives to players to complete their games and two makes your system/software maintenance a little easier.

2. It would be useful to denote the type of game being played in the online games list. Considering I play on my smart phone, it would be especially helpful when I'm playing multiple, concurrent games.

If there was no vacation, it would eliminate a ton of players like me from tournaments, or any short games. My work, and several other responsibilities (most recently an out of town wedding I was part of) occaisionally keeps me offline longer than I'd like. And I would solely play 14 day games.

It's generally impossible to predict when tournaments or team matches will start - or when they will end. If vacation were not allowed, Team Matches would suffer the same dearth of players as  B_Cuzican mentions for tournaments.

It is possible to create tournaments in which vacation is not permitted - designed especially for those members who find vacation irksome.

Well okay, then you're saying no one has a real problem with tournament delays in a range that could amount to months.  Fine, I'm a novice anyway so tournament delays don't apply to me.  However, still seems to defeat the purpose of a tournament. Be that as it may, sure, leave a vacation hiatus option for tournament players.  I'm suggesting the elimination or option (via a radio button/flag/etc.) to make vacation holds elective per social/non-tournament games.

Stalling is a problem - and it's not confined to taking vacations, nor to turn-based chess. However, I cannot grasp in what sense stalling is a problem OUTSIDE of tournaments.

Turn-based chess

Live chess

Outside tournaments

Forget the game until you get notified it’s your move again. NO BIG DEAL!

You can only play ONE live chess game at a time; you are forced to wait for the full time period (several minutes – or even an hour) for each move. VERY ANNOYING!

Inside tournaments

The tournament may be held up for weeks – affecting many people. Basic members are limited to one tournament; Gold members are limited to 10 tournaments – so you could be blocked from participating in other tournaments by a staller. SLIGHTLY ANNOYING.

Articulated well to a degree, however, my main gripe remains: "vacation status" is stalling.  If it weren't the case would be argued that everyone leaves their Droid, iPhone, laptop, netbook, workstation, etc. at home while they vacate (which NO ONE does in this never-disconnected age).

Further, that we're allowed up to 14 days/move offers more than ample time to take our time, think through our next move, and execute our play.  So, don't use vacation as an out; concede the game if you need more than 14 days for a move (or plan better in advance which would serve your chess play in itself).  If someone has a bona-fide reason to vacate a game including completely disconnecting ALL of their digital devices, they can ask for a rematch when they return and/or have adequate time to finish the game.

What else am I missing?

You are wrong. Vacation time when abused is stalling. Vacation time, however, is not. And your complaint that everyone should be available to a computer may have some merit, (although I recently did a wilderness trip where there was no internet to say the least). And your "solution"?? to just give people a rematch and have them time out?? That is just unfair. You are asking people to lose a game that maybe they deserved to win.
