What are points?

Would someone kindly explain what points are and how you get them? I really don't care, but found it odd that a few weeks after joining, and playing several games (not very well), that I received 1 point. Then a few days later I suddenly had 14 points. I have found no explanation of these points anywhere. Thank you. Liz

Here's a quote from the Support Page:

"Member Points are an index of your participation in the more social or community-oriented aspects of Chess.com.

You get a point every time you...

  • comment on something
  • create a forum post
  • post a blog
  • publish an article

They simply show how active you are in these areas.  You can't buy anything with them!  :)" For example, I might get points by posting this. Smile

I sell my points to Paco down the street, he's a local drug dealer. He sells them for food stamps to feed his family. Now, I said I sell mine. He gives me money. I use that money to put gas in my car. Then I can go cash in my empty cans. With the can money, I get my drums out of the pawn shop. Then I play a gig, to get enough money, to renew my membership here, where I get more points, to sell to Paco, etc, etc.  Everybody wins!Smile  The musicians, the pawn shop owners, the drug dealers and addicts, the gas stations, the can redemption center, the children are fed, the food stamp people, and Chess.com   THANKS ERIC.Wink

Are points pointless ?

Avatar of PrestigiousEclipse

Pretty much. They are just there so people can see how much you participate socially. Unless you do what RonaldJosephCote does. xD

I heard yrs ago when the site was very young, you could trade them in for items like hats, key chains, T-shits, etc. But that may have only lasted for 1 or 2 yrs.  It was probably an incentive to get people to post. But then one night, a truckful of trolls broke in and stole a lot of them. It was a messCry The FBI was called. The usual suspects were rounded up. I remember it was a Thurs, it was raining. We all had to do a purp walk in a line-up. They caught a few minions, but Staff couldn't do a positive identification.Embarassed

Good point.

Avatar of Ziryab

Just tell them how many points you have on chess.com when you order your coffee at Starbucks. You might be surprised at the consequence.

This is so different than reading comments on yahoo articles. More people should play chess.
