The king! Without it you lose the game =)

Fancy_Pants_Orange

Yeah but no one can take the king so how are you supposed to lose it?

johnnyearth

Check mate is the move where you lose your king. Just because it is not required to continue a play after a checkmate it doesnt mean your king is safe!

Um... I dunno, but I'll take a wild guess here.

The dark square bishop?

KantTouchThis

the king is the worst piece you can have, if you dont have the king you cant get checkmated, therefore you cannot lose

johnnyearth

the purpose of the game is to take out the king. Without the king there is no game, therefore it is the best piece =)

All the pieces of my army that have fought and died to bring about victory...

The most important piece in the game is the one that is in the best position to win the game. Just my $.02.

King, obvious. You need to protect it.

In some positions like when your attacking and you have a pawn storm to threaten mate then the pawn is the most important piece in this attack. If it's a King + Rook/Queen vs King endgame then the most important piece is the rook/queen for the checkmate. If it's the opening and you have your knight/ bishop controlling the centre really well then that is the most important piece...only for the opening. Especially Legal's Mate.

But overall, it's the king. It's the piece that will make you cry even if your opponent sacrifices almost all his pieces for the mate.

The waffle then.

How about bomb? It bombs your opponent's pieces up and you'll win :)

strange

Fancy_Pants_Orange

those are not chess pieces!

I think there are maybe three answers depending on the criteria...

Most valuable piece = King - since if you lose the king you lose the game

Most powerful piece = Queen

Most strategically significant piece(s) = pawns (taken as a group) since the pawn structure determines the plans for both sides.

^^ good answer.

Guys you cant lose your king because it cant be taken! Ive heard a lot of comments saying that if you lose the king you lose the game! This is not true! You have to checkmate the king!

When you're in checkmate you're one move away from losing your king, so it's not considered necessary to continue.  If it makes you happy we could alter that statement to, "if you cannot avoid losing your king (the definition of checkmate) then you lose the game".

DUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH the king

bigbird419

You loose the king by check mate because your kings under attack and there's no where to run check mate also means the king is dead in a differant language
