Why is there no take back option?

Sort:
Gatri51

I've had too many games where a player has dropped a piece unintentionally in the wrong place making the rest of the game pointless. I usually offer a draw but I would much rather have the option to offer a take back so we can continue enjoying our game. Has chess.com ever considered this option?

By "unintentionally dropping a piece", I didn't mean a mistake in strategy, I meant a person most likely playing on a phone or tablet, who intended to place a piece on one square, but accidently put it somehwere else due to a hardware error, or perhaps lag, which has happened to me. Judging by these comments it seems that quite a few people still wouldn't want this option so that they can still claim a victory in this manner. Is it really worth winnng if the game wasn't enjoyable?

Haha yes I completely understand what your mean. If chess.com would implement this feature into their system it would be really appreciated.

It's a good thing to have for teaching purposes as well. As long as both players agree with the takeback I don't see the problem.

There is a takeback option for correspondence chess and it is useful in a teaching situation.

An option to trade sides would be interesting too.  For example, if you were playing a much lower rated player and got a piece, you could trade sides and let the lower rated player try to win with the extra piece.

I thought that we are trying to win. I would go join the Bronies if I wanted to make friends.

Gatri, you are so generous! Frightfully sporting, though.

If the player seems decent (I know - usually how would you know?) and the move wasn't a capture, you could offer to make a move that does nothing, have him move his piece back, and then you move your piece back.  I did this to a guy... twice! He told me I was nice. Smile Then a game or two later I made a mouse slip and he chatted that he wasn't a nice guy Tongue OutCry

No takesies-backsies! I called it.

I think there are takebacks in "online chess" on this site, as opposed to "live chess"...

In live chess, the very act of offering a takeback would put you in disadvantage because it takes a 1-2 second to click on the button. In fact, much of bullet and blitz strategy depends on your opponent making a stupid mistake...  Some people love it for exactly that reason... You would probably hate it, and I kinda agree... :D

I'm glad there's no takeback option. I can only imagine how trolls and cheaters would abuse it. And it would slow down games.

I think it should be there but should be allowed only if both players agreed.

Why is there no take back option ? Because this is CHESS... Not Candyland.

Nice idea. Especially for teaching.

If you want to do that, play a game on an analysis board in live chess. Just treat it as a game board, but you can actually make any move (legal or not) that you want. That's how I did lessons.

The problem is the jerks that will get furious and berate you if you don't offer the takeback after they blunder, you can always just have a rematch instead.

I don't think cheaters need the takeback option... That's the point.  And the person offerred a takeback is under no obligation to accept, which also eliminates trolls... Thus, your comment is completely beside the point.

How about a 'takebeer' button?

You should do that - maybe they could give you a hand with your spelling.
