hmmm try sending a ticket to chess.com
I have windows 8 and it works fine
jonathanstepney, I am investigating this problem.
What browser and browser version are you using? Does this happen all the time?
Hi, LuckyFelix, thanks for mentioning this problem: that you can't play on a Windows 8 touchscreen.
Please help me out with the following so I can investigate: what browser and version are you using? Is this new? And can you move the pieces at all?
Thank you, Felix! Again, I'm sorry you're having this problem but I'm going to do everything I can to see that it works.
Hello Squarology,
I've tried windows 8 directly with IE 10 and Chrome Version 30.0.1599.101 m and through Facebook using IE and Chrome.
They respond to mouse commands very smoothly.
But, they all fail to respond to touchscreen in the same manner. When I tried to move a piece by touching the screen, I can get the selected piece to have a square cursor around it but I cannot move to another square. I can sometimes wiggle the piece a bit, but never completely off of its square.
I just started using windows 8 yesterday, I looked up drag and drop procedure for win 8, but I can't make it work for chess.com. I'm generally still happy with chess.com. But it would be nice to be able to use touch screen.
Thank you for your help!
Thank you, Felix, for all of that information.
I tried drag & drop on Wacom Bamboo Create and I had no problems. But I am using Windows 7. If you don't mind I'd really appreciate it if you could answer these further questions:
Does drag & drop work on other websites? For example on these sites: http://www.seniornet.org/howto/mouseexercises/dragpractice1.html and http://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/sheaa/projects/genki/hiragana-timer.html
Have you tried drag & drop on Tactics Trainer (http://www.chess.com/tactics/) and Chess Mentor (http://www.chess.com/chessmentor/myhome)? If so, does drag & drop work?
And can you move the pieces on your touch screen by clicking the piece and then clicking the destination square?
I just need to be sure that WIndows 8's drag & drop functionality is OK. And those last questions might help our engineers figure out what's up if it's not Window's problem. If it's Window's problem then there's really nothing we can do. However, if it's on our end, I'll notify our engineers so they can begin the process to fix it. Thanks so much, Felix! We appreciate you helping us here so that we can figure out what's wrong.
Hello Squarology!
I think the problem may be related to a problem I'm having with Adobe Flash Player. It is supposed to be an add-on in Win 8, it has to be enabled and ActiveX must be disabled. But that isn't working. Sometimes some things work when I disable and enable and start a new browser but this isn't consistent. This is what I had to do to get the seniornet dragpractice site to work.
I've prefaced my responses with ">>>>>>>>>>"
Does drag & drop work on other websites? For example on these sites:
http://www.seniornet.org/howto/mouseexercises/dragpractice1.html
>>>>>>>>>> Website worked after I enabled and disabled ActiveX and disabled and enabled Flash Player add-on.
and http://www.csus.edu/indiv/s/sheaa/projects/genki/hiragana-timer.html
>>>>>>>>>> It works somewhat, I can move characters but they may not be sticking in the boxes. I don't know Japanese, so I cannot match the letter combinations to the Japanese characters.
Have you tried drag & drop on Tactics Trainer (http://www.chess.com/tactics/) and Chess Mentor (http://www.chess.com/chessmentor/myhome)? If so, does drag & drop work?
>>>>>>>> Yes, I've tried. Tactics, puzzles, analysis, openings database, normal moves, all fail in the same way.
And can you move the pieces on your touch screen by clicking the piece and then clicking the destination square?
>>>>>>>>>> No, I tried that first. Doesn't work.
Thanks for your help!
Joe "LuckyFelix"
I just went back to the seniornet site. The drag and drop now works, consistently, but only after I switch my browser over to the "desktop" environment. Unfortunately, using the desktop environment hasn't helped with Chess.com.
Joe, thank you so much for all that information. You are much too kind with your time. Today when I write my daily report to the CEO and the VP of Content, I will report this as an issue that needs to be looked at ASAP.
In the meantime could you please fill out a ticket? Please? To do that go here: http://support.chess.com/Tickets/Submit and choose "Technical Support & Bug Reports" and then copy paste the vital information from this thread into the message details. This is just to be sure that one of our programmers gets the message and that every kink that needs to be worked out actually gets worked out.
Again, thank you, Joe, for bringing this to our attention.
I have some advice: Uninstall Windows 8, take your copy and walk over to your garbage, throw it in, walk back to your computer, reinstall Windows 7.
Thank me later.
LuckyFelix, I've found out that at the moment we're not actively developing for the Windows 8 drag functionality.
I know that it's a bummer to have that kind of technoloy and not be able to use it at Chess.com but it's been noted as a suggestion!! Thank you, Lucky, for all the troubleshooting you've done. If anything else comes up, don't hesitate to contact me! See you.
Having just installed windows 8, the website does not work properly - cannot pick up the pieces or move them. Is there anything else I need to install to make it work? It was fine with windows 7.
