Wow, that's a lot of ads

I run an ad-blocker and I just switched to v3 on chess.com, which apparently is able to prevent the ad-blocker. OMG you have so many ads. They're everywhere!

I think I'll use the old site!

I'm sure I saw research that trying to force ads on people using ad-blockers is counter-productive.

Really?Which ad blocker are you using? The one I use works just fine, I can block anything I want.

Chess.com used to have a notice supporting addblockers

Wahtever the most popular one in Chrome is. It works perfectly on every other site, including the old chess.com. On v3 I can block ads and it seesm to be working but as soon as I say "OK block it" it appears again. Bizarre.

I'm not hugely opposed to the ads but on v3 I seem to get the same ad on the page about 4 times so they're not even interesting.

give us a screenshot please, I only get ads asking my to upgrade my account, and they are not quite annoying

GodsPawn2016

Even as a free member i never had an intrusive ad.

Just to be on the safe side, check your system for malware. It's a good idea to do that every now and then, anyway.

In V3 they aren't, in V2 they were.  Especially for correspondence/daily games, where you had to scroll down past an add to see the whole board.  And that took ages to load for me.

Chess.com is somehow able to avoid the adblocker software and show ads anyway.

In addition to the "upgrade your account" ad which is always on the right side (which I am okay with), there is always an ad on the top - before it was for cat food, now for video games on Playstation 4.

Of course chess.com is bypassing adblocker.  They are trying to get some revenue with the free accounts.

I only see the upgrade your account one, both in Firefox with Adblock Plus and in Chrome with Adblock, what are you using to block ads???

I use ublock origin. Reason why I don't use adblock plus is that they allow some ads. With ublock origin you can block other things as well, especailly those upgrade my account ads. What you have then is a clean page.

Free is free, meaning I don't pay money. I am under no obligation to see ads, so I will use an adblocker if I want.

Maybe chess.com should remove ads on the actual game pages.  I left ads unblocked for a long, long time...until they added ads to actual game pages.  I got tired of looking at a bunch of very lowbrow ads while trying to calculate moves.  There were also the ads that had sound turned on and even when you turned the sound off, it would reset every new ad that rotated and you'd have to turn the sound off again.  I spoke to chess.com support numerous times about the sound ads...no result.

The kicker was when an ad interfered with the board display/functionality and I could not make a move.  That was it for me.

I would be happy to remove adblocker, which I currently only have turned on for total of 3 websites worldwide, mind you, if the ads were not so intrusive (Yahoo and Chicago Tribune are the other two, if you want to know which sites have the most intrusive/flaky ads).  No ads on game board pages...the concept is ridiculous anyway, because the clickthrough rate on game board pages must be infinitesimal (i.e. chess.com will make negligible revenue from these particular type of pages serving ads anyway).  Who is going to click on an ad during a rapid time control game, for example?  "Oh crap, I am down a full minute on the clock, what will I do?  Wait, that is a really gross image of toenail fungus, let me just click on that and come back to the game later...".  Yeah, not happening.

Personally, I use little to no resources, really only playing votechess here anymore, and post on the forums on occasion, usually trying to help clean up the mess/cesspool they have become.  I suppose chess.com could get annoyed and cut me and other players that use ad-blockers off cold turkey, but then instead of spending time between 2 chess websites, I would probably spend all of my time on 1...that one being an unnamed free site (no ads) that is arguably better for live chess.

ads are part of the free membership, and yes you have the right to try and block them.  Just as chess.com has a right to bypass those extensions.

They are not doing a very good job bypassing it. I haven't seen any ads on version 3.
