Can USCF rating floors be obtained by winning certain tournaments?

I think @Reb was mentioning it since you said you got $1,000 for U2200, then $700-800 for 5th and also the best female. That 700-800 shouldn't be possible in combination with the U2200, unless the prizes were combined and split with other players, giving you additional money over what you would have received if you only qualified for the U2200 prize.

I was playing in the U2200 section and I tied for 5th. It wasn't a U2200 prize.

Martin_Stahl

So, $300 plus the 700-800? It kind of read like you got both that and $1,000 grin.png

The rating floors for prizes wouldn't have included special prizes.

So if I win an under U2400 tournamnet will my rating jump from 1337 to 2337 in one tournament?

Squishey

rating floors are a joke lol

If the prize is high enough, you can gain a high floor from winning one. But, if you have a stable 1337 it is very unlikely you'll be able to win an U2400 section in an event.

I agree !  As a senior player now I also think rating floors should be removed , or at least adjusted , for senior players .

Martin_Stahl

They have the option to request the removal of a floor. From what others have said,  it is rarely, if ever done, though I personally know of no one that has tried.

I think rating floors are part of what contributes to the inflation we see in ratings today, along with the increased participation in the chess world. USCF could possibly implement a system in which if a floored player remains at their floor, or close to it (never going above, let's say, +50), then the floor can be removed at the discretion of the federation.

Discretion is kinda a bad thing when it comes ratings. I know in a certain national federation, their rating can be affected by discretion. E.g. this one player had a massive rating increase due to the glicko system and some miracle run. The rating people decided he won too much ratings they just reduced his gain by a bit to their discretion.

I understand why rating floors are there. The old people have pride too. Alot of them use to be 2000-2100 expert and now fallen to 1600 due to fatigue and age. Most of them quit before that happens because of the embarrassment they might feel when they go play (compared to their glory days). With a rating floor, at least they given some incentive come back.

It's why alot of masters quit competitive chess in their old age which is a shame. Hence I can see why USCF or other federation chose to be practical and keep the diversity and number of the game. However, I don't see this happening at FIDE because to them its very professional and they value system intergrity over just promoting the game.

So do I have to give the uscf money to raise my rating floor? Or just win money?

Yes!

For the rules on floors and cash prizes go to:

I'm rated about 1300 or so...

if if in win $2,000 in an U2400 tournamnet then what is my rating and rating floor...

JuergenWerner

According to that link it is $4,000. So, if I win $4,000 in an U2200 section then my rating will jump from 1337 to 2200 in one tournamnet!

this is not good because I could just be having a good day and my 2200 rating would be an inflated rating...

Martin_Stahl

The likelihood of winning an U2200 section with that kind of prize fund is pretty low unless your rating/strength is pretty good to begin with. Just having a good day wouldn't be enough. Also, I'm sure the USCF looks at  the average opponent strength when making the determination if they will floor you or not.

Reb

USCF uses rating floors in a pitiful attempt to fight against " sandbaggers " .  I don't think it works very well and there must be better ways to stop/discourage " sandbagging " .  A floored player can also represent new/different problems for USCF .  My floor is 2000 .

I didn't say win U2200, I said win $4,000 in an U2200. For example, the millionaires tournament and so forth...

In that tournamnet isn't $4,000 like 5th place or something?
Martin_Stahl

Ok, winning 4,000 in an U2200 is still only likely for someone that is 2000+ strength anyway, still not just having a good day.

I actually looked at that set of tourneys to see if I could find an example. I found a few players that look like they received floors but did not find any 2200 floors given, at least not in a quick check.
