Is it common that players don't play? (online daily tournaments)

I am playing in my first online daily tournament. The group size is four.

8 of 11 groups have at least one member who never played (timed out)! Is this common, in tournaments??

This is unfair to the other participants, if only because it slows down the tournament as everyone waits around for opponents who time out in the end.

I wonder why this is happening, so I quickly checked the records of all the players who have timed out all or nearly all their games in this tournament. With one exception, these players have played almost NO (zero) regular classic Daily games previously, and some have also timed out in other tournaments. The one exception plays many daily games, so he might have had a legitimate reason for suddenly not being able to play.

I don't understand why Live Chess players join Daily tournaments and then never play; maybe they get bored waiting for others to play. Anyway, it would seem that a simple way to avoid this in the future is to require a minimum number of Daily games having been played, for those wishing to enter the tournament. But I would love to hear from dropouts as to why they signed up but never moved.

Agree... get lots of abandoned games in daily (not just tournaments)...

These people need to be punished. (Ban their account for 2 days)
