Rating, if you get yellow and run

I know a player, he seems to be protecting his 1700+ rating, though I think he's not there any more...he got beat by a 1500 player at a coffee shop, and I, who am maybe a 1400 player, played him a close game before he beat me by a couple of pawns.    Anyway, at a recent tournament, he played a lesser player and won, then got beat by a much better player, then quit and went home.  He didn't play his final 3 games.  By leaving like that, those 3 unplayed games won't hurt your rating?

How can you possibly adjust a rating based on a game not played?  It affects his tournament results....

if he told the T.D. and withdrew from the tournament, no. It won't hurt is rating. However, if he didn't tell anybody that he was leaving, the games would count has forfeits from him.

im unclear about how the ratings work do they apply in coffee shops or is it only tournaments?

my USCF rating is about 1760.

Mcleanio, for matches to affect your rating, it would have to be a rated match. Some times, they just play for fun.

Thx for the answers.  I only meant in the coffee cafe game, that he got beat by the lesser opponent, and even though they both took the game seriously,  it was not rated.  I apologize to having sounded so crass, calling it 'got yellow and ran'.
