The Matchmaking system creates TurDnaments....

Hi Gents.

I wonder why this is the case, that I as a 1200 player get to play 1500-1700 Players in a Tournaments first round in the first game. I mean SERIOUSLY, what is up with that?

Yes, my score doesn't drop much if I loose, but how am I expected to wih this?

Now I'm talking about the FIRST ROUND of the tournament. Later It's obvious players get better.

Anyhow, I, as a novice-player often loose. And this is perfectly OK, if it's a fair match. In my league there's a blunder and a few mistakes in every game. Happens to both players and it's an even match.

But I have a SERIOUS problem when soneone paints a target on my back and feeds me to 1500 and above players, because I have no chance of winning this.

I'm sure there's a way you can see what games I played last, somewhere in my profile. Try filtering for the tournament games and you'll see what I mean.

In EVERY tournament so far I had to play people with 10-30% better scores than me in the first round in the first game.

The result was that I have withdrawn from those tournaments where the Score difference is ridiculous.

Again: If I loose in a FAIR match (that is my score +/- 50 Points, or even a 100) I have no problem with that.

But the way it is, I seriously question the matchmaking system behind this.

Here are a few glorious examples what I mean:

How in the DUCK am I supposed to win such a game??

If I remember it right they pit the top vs the bottom early on.   That means you don't get weirdness in round 4 like a 1200 still playing in round 4 while an 1850 has been knocked out because the 1850 lost to some 2k rated guys and the 1200 beat the 1000 and 1100 he was paired against.   If you do top vs bottom, the lower players lose fast and as expected the higher rated guys are all that are left in the last few rounds.

Aah, that explains it!

That is like if the developer that decided this - with no boxing experience - gets in the ring with a regional box champion.

I totally get it. THIS is FAIRNESS as I expect it!

Because like you say: We don't want any 1200 in Round 4, that would be outrageous...

So what you're saying is, that while I'm at the bottom, I get stomped on in any tournament, but this really isn't a bug, this is actually how it is intended to be.

Okay, I can live with that, IF i can see that boxing match now between the DEV treating novices so unfairly and that regional boxing champ.

I might be a bit emotional now, but this is EXACTLY what happens in SO MANY online games: STOMPING THE NOOB!

The fair way would be all 1700 in a group and all 1200 in a Group.

Equal chances of getting to the next round.

I mean really, THIS is a jewel: http://www.chess.com/echess/game?id=120389908

1800 VS 1200 Cool

I really feel welcomed and appreciated in a tournament like this. O.o

### Edit: here's another one I just resigned: http://www.chess.com/echess/game?id=120389906

1200 VS 1700 again. Cool

Look I understand the logic behind this system and it makes sense.

But I started out at 600 and worked my way up to 1200 before I even dared to enter a tournament.

....Only to find out that my efforts aren't worth jack there.

There are lower-rated tournaments, <1200, <1400, you might do better in one of those if you're hoping to do well. Your rating is too low to expect to do well in an open tournament, but that's the way it should be. In an open tournament the 1800s and 2000s should be the ones to get to the later rounds unless the weaker players like you and me can manage to beat them.

white_blade

Yea I understand. Apparently the "Open" doesn't mean the ending is open. Just the entrance.

While the "Limited" Tournaments (Like <1200) actually means a player is less limited by his score because he's matched with equals.

This *obviously* makes sense.

Legit! Cool

As a positive sidenotice here:

Resigning 15-20 ridiculously unfair-matched Tournament games COMPLETELY TRASHED my stats by over 200 Points.

So basically, I get so pass on my frustration now. Artificially lowering the stats (by resigning unfair matches over 200 Points difference) actually matches me with lower players now, making it an easy game to win.

And so we go back to the very essence of online gaming here: Stomping the noob... Cool

Seriously... Something needs to be changed here.

Rsava

No, nothing needs to be changed here. This is actually the way it is designed. It works similar in the real world tournaments also.

As noted, there are tournaments that are U1200 and U1400, maybe you would be more comfortable in those.

But, instead of complaining, why try and learn from it. Play your best then analyze the game and try and find one - just one thing - that you did wrong and how to correct it and then one - and just one - that your opponent did that surprised you or was a winning move and figure out why they made that move and how you could have prevented it.

I also can't figure put why you resigned that game (http://www.chess.com/echess/game?id=120389906), you were just 3 moves in. Do you give up and go home when there are too many people on the sidewalk? You seem to give up rather easily.

Uh, no...Open tournaments provide the opportunity to play with folks considerably better than you; an opportunity that wouldn't arise during the normal pairing process.  I'm sorry you didn't understand how open tournaments worked before joining them and lost 200 rating points, but now you know how the system works.

Go for them! And next time don't forget the ladies when you are introducing your topic.
