Chess rules and regulation for beginners

For beginners, understanding the basic rules and regulations is the first step toward appreciating and enjoying this timeless game

The Chessboard and Pieces

The game is played on an 8x8 square board with alternating light and dark squares. Each player starts with 16 pieces:

1 King

1 Queen

2 Rooks

2 Bishops

2 Knights

8 Pawns

The pieces are arranged on the first two ranks (rows) for each player, with the back rank housing the major pieces and the front row lined with pawns

Basic Movement Rules

King: Moves one square in any direction.

Queen: Moves any number of squares in any direction.

Rook: Moves any number of squares vertically or horizontally.

Bishop: Moves diagonally any number of squares.

Knight: Moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular.

Pawn: Moves forward one square (or two on its first move), captures diagonally.

Special Rules

Castling: A special move involving the king and a rook. It’s the only time the king moves more than one square. Conditions must be met: neither piece has moved before, no pieces between them, and the king cannot castle out of or through check.

En Passant: A special pawn capture that can happen if a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and lands beside an opponent's pawn

Pawn Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opponent’s back rank, it can be promoted to any piece (except a king), typically a queen.

Check: The king is under threat but not yet captured. The player must make a move to protect the king.

Checkmate: The king is in check, and no legal move can prevent capture. This ends the game.

Stalemate: A draw where the player has no legal moves and is not in check.

Regulations and Etiquette

Touch-Move Rule: In formal games, if a player touches a piece, they must move it (if legally possible).

Time Controls: Competitive chess often includes clocks, giving each player a set amount of time to make all their moves.

Draw Offers: A draw can be agreed upon by both players at any time during the game.
