We're excited to announce the final event of this year's Chess.com Community Championships, the Chess.com Fog of War Chess Championship! The event starts on December 11 and features a $2,500 prize fund

Fog of War chess is not a variant for the faint of heart. It's almost like regular chess, except for two important distinctions: Players must capture the enemy king to win, and they can only see the squares their pieces attack.

The game's fog adds suspense and surprise to each move: Is that hanging piece really free for the taking, or just a vicious bait to trap you? With the variant's unique mechanics, non-conventional play and sneak attacks can be a player's best weapons! Below is a video of IMs Levy Rozman and Eric Rosen playing Fog of War.

The action starts on December 11 with eight qualifiers spread out throughout the day. Each qualifier is a 75-minute arena with a 3+2 time control. Any member of the community is welcome to play. Check out the detailed qualifier schedule and click the Join button to participate!

You might not see much of the board, but we'll be keeping an eye on everyone. As always, our team will be monitoring the event to ensure fair play and a safe playing environment for everyone. During the qualifier, players may be invited to a Fair Play call. During the call, the player needs to set up two cameras from different angles in the room. Players who refuse to join the call will be disqualified from the event.

The winner of each qualifier arena will then join the Final on December 12. The final is a double-elimination knockout bracket with a 3+2 time control and a best-of-four match format.

Only the boldest and the best will be able to outmaneuver their opponents in the darkness. Last year, it was FM Luis Chan who took the title after defeating FM Yihe Fu in a close match. After the win, Chan noted that he had been playing the variant since its release on Chess.com. "I've loved it ever since then," he said. "I think it's a really good mind game. You try to trick your opponent, and there's some cool tactics."

Are you ready to face the unknown and play in the Chess.com Fog of War Chess Championship? Then mark your calendar and join the qualifiers on December 11!
