Palo Alto, Calif., July 7, 2020—Chess.com and Twitch are teaming up once again to bring chess to the esports mainstream with a Europe vs. North America team event called Twitch Rivals: Chess Showdown to be held on Friday, July 10 at 1 p.m. Pacific time / 22:00 Central Europe. The prize fund is $15,000.

The tournament has 16 participants in four teams of four players. They start with a round-robin phase in which each team faces the other three teams.

In each individual team match, players play two games against the same opponent for a total of eight game points. The time control is 10 minutes plus a two-second increment and games are played in the Chess.com Live Server.

In the case of a 4-4 tie, there will be a playoff among the two board-one players of each team, who will play single games with three minutes and a two-second increment on the clock until a game ends decisively.

The top two teams from the round-robin phase will then play a Championship Match, while the bottom two teams will play a Consolation Match.

Both the round-robin phase and the Championship Match have $6,000 in prizes with another $3,000 for the Consolation Match for a total prize fund of $15,000.

The participants of the tournament are hutch (captain), nymn (captain), boxbox (captain), TrumpSC, zalaehs, moistcr1tikal, ludwig, fuslie, erobb221, papaplatte, natehill, Itssliker, withluvxina, Scarra, QTcinderella, and Firebat.

The event will be broadcast live with commentary by GM Hikaru Nakamura, WFM Alexandra Botez, and IM Danny Rensch on Chess.com/TV.

"Bringing some of the top streamers in the world together for Twitch Rivals is the perfect conclusion to the highly successful Chess.com Pogchamps," said Chess.com's Director of Business Development, Strategy & Growth Nick Barton. "The chess boom we've seen unfold on Twitch has been full of can't-miss moments and unforgettable memes. We think there are plenty more of those to come at Rivals this Friday."

Twitch Rivals is a series of competitive events for Twitch streamers and viewers in a wide range of esports. According to Twitch, 2020 will include over 100 event days featuring new formats, games, interactive extensions, and millions of dollars in prize money.

It will be the second time that chess is featuring in Twitch Rivals, after last year's Komodo Boss Rush, in which top chess and variety streamers from Twitch paired up to battle the Chess.com computer engine Komodo at increasing difficulty levels.
