Alexei Shirov shook off the disappointment of his rapid match loss to world champion Vishy Anand with a win in the first round of the Sigeman tournament in Malmö, Sweden.

Shirov 's win came against the oldest competitor in the event, 47-year old Jonny Hector. Joining Shirov in the early lead is Hans Tikkanen who beat fellow Swede Nils Grandelius.

The clash between prodigies Anish Giri and Wesley So failed to generate much excitement and ended all-square.

The tournament runs from 9-13 June and the official website has live coverage of the games starting at 14:00 CET (12:00 UTC) every day, except the last round which starts 2 hours earlier.
