The Nimzo Indian Defense was worked out by Aron Nimzowitsch and played a role in his conception of the center. Each of Black's moves is directed at controlling the d5 and e4 squares with the pieces rather than the pawns. The key move 3...Bb4 pins the white knight on c3 and defines the Nimzo Indian.
