Bio

IM Rashid Nezhmetdinov was one of the Soviet Union's best attacking players in the 1950s and 1960s. Perhaps the greatest, GM Mikhail Tal, actually had a losing record against Nezhmetdinov in official games. The two of them worked together when Tal won the world championship in 1960.

Nezhmetdinov won the Russian (not Soviet) Championship five times in the 1950s, but never achieved the title of grandmaster. In 1958, in the course of winning his fifth Russian chess championship, Nezhmetdinov defeated GM Lev Polugaevsky with one of the greatest queen sacrifices and checkmating attacks in history.
