Valery Salov is a Russian grandmaster and GM Anatoly Karpov's second from 1985 to 1986. Salov won the U-17 World Youth Chess Championship and the European Junior Championship in 1983-94.

Salov came close to winning the USRR Championship twice. The first time was in 1987 when he shared first place with GM Alexander Beliavsky but lost in the tiebreaks. A year later, he finished tied for third behind chess legends Karpov and GM Garry Kasparov.
