This tournament remembers the most famous Danish philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard, the forerunner of Existentialism, that explores the conditions of human existence from an individual point of view.

Deeply affected by Christian theology and a broken engagement to his early love Regine Olsen, Kierkegaard described three stages of the human moral existence: Human being acts are (i) motivated by sensual impressions only, without any self-reflection – particularly in case of love – in the aesthetical stage, (ii) conditioned by rationality and social conventions in the ethical stage and (iii) inspired by his self-conscious existence in face of God in the religious stage.

The tournament addresses particularly advanced learners of chess and philosophy, in order to encourage them to progress in both fields and to take an 'existential trophy'!
