Sam Hopkins was a Texas bluesman who pursued his calling from the '20s all the way to the '80s. Hopkins was a master rhythm guitar player and lyrical improviser. Influenced by Blind Lemon Jefferson and Texas Alexander, Hopkins—rechristened "Lightnin'"—signed with Aladdin Records in the '40s.

The prolific singer/guitarist, who recorded for countless labels over the years, scored hits up to the mid-'50s before falling into obscurity. Hopkins returned in 1959 on the Folkways label, introducing his music to an entirely new audience, and he continued working until his death in 1982.
