This is a highly positional opening with excellent chances for White.  You don't necessarily need to know as much detailed theory as other lines and it will sharpen your positional thinking.

I have indicated a minimum number of games so we are dealing with something closer to people's real ELOs.  That will help ensure even play among groups.

This tournament is set to start January 30, 2012.

Closed Sicilian set to start

patca63 | Jan 25, 2012, 1:48 PM

There are 8 players between 1301 and 1500 set to go for this tournament.  Usually, I have two people advance per group, but for this one only ONE person per group will go on.

With a field of 8, six people will be eliminated in the first round.  This should make it quite competitive among the people signed up.

I wanted to open it to a broader range of Elos and I tried, but there wasn't much interest.  Looking at who is signed up now, it made sense to start sooner with a nice tight Elo group.

Closed Sicilian Tournament -- 1100-1501

There are a only THREE spots left in this Closed Sicilian Tournament which is scheduled to start on January 30, 2012.  Participation requires a minimum of 50 completed games on chess.com to insure a relatively accurate Elo.  The field will have only ten players, so you will have a good chance to win.

The Closed Sicilian often comes up when playing Sicilian variations and presents some challenges and opportunities for white.  Generally, this it can be played positionally, but it is particularly challenging for white.

The Sicilian Defense tournaments are particulary nice because TWO people advance and there is a mixed range.  You might see any type of Open Sicilian or variation including various types of defenses and Anti-Sicilians.

These tournaments are a great opportunity to polish your skills in this opening which occurs 33% of the time after 1. e4.  You can sign up for one or more and you will NEVER have to play more than four simultaneous games per tournament.

Closed Sicilian Tournament

patca63 | Dec 31, 2011, 4:45 PM

This upcoming Tournament has been changed to keep the group small with tight Elos and a minimum of 50 games.  It's a bit difficult to equalize as white, but it's a great and successful opening for Black that can be played largely on positional considerations without knowing a lot of theory.

The tournament starts January 30, 2012.  Sign up today if you are interested, there are only a few slots left to fill.

Happy New Year!  Smile

Dear Friends:

I had to change the start date for this tournament to the January 30, 2012 so it wouldn't get pulled down for not starting in 90 days.  I would like to start with 100 people, but if we have trouble reaching that number because of the 100 game minimum requirement, I'll lower the size of the field.  In the meantime, tell your friends!
