This is a "No Vacation" tournament!

Are you an under-900 ("beginner") player who wants to get into daily tournaments but wants to play a set of opponents whose ratings are closer to your own? Then I hope you'll join this tournament.

  • All players under 900 are welcome! This tourney really is for beginner-level players, whether you're new to the game, just getting back into the game, or have been playing for a while and are hoping to get better by playing folks at your level. Getting mercilessly crushed by an opponent who out-rates you by a thousand points isn't fun. We're here to improve.
  • Don't be put off by the title "beginner." I don't like it either. Since I've been playing for a long time, I don't consider myself a beginner, but that's the word we use for this rating level. Don't take it as a slight -- use it as inspiration to improve! Personally, my goal is to someday be a "club player."
  • Max timeout percentage is 99%. Did life happen? You couldn't log in to move for whatever reason, and you timed out of a bunch of games? And now your timeout percentage is keeping you out of tournaments? Don't worry about it. We've all been there. C'mon and play!
  • Only one game at a time! Don't worry about the stress of having two, four, even eight games or more going at the same time. I've set this up for one game at a time (If I understood the setting correctly. Gosh I really hope I understood the setting correctly.).
  • THIS IS A NO-VACATION TOURNAMENT. A common reason people miss starting their next game is because of hold-ups caused by someone in their group being on vacation. The next round can't start until that person comes back -- and then, if you don't log in every day or don't have your notifications set up to tell you when the next round starts, you miss the start and lose your game by timeout. Plus, different membership levels allow different amounts of vacation time, and so on. A no-vacation tournament levels the playing field.
  • "When will the tournament start?" The tournament starts automatically when the roster fills up. Since this is a small group, only 32 players, it shouldn't take long at all. (I hope.)

If you have questions, let me know in the comments below. I'm a beginner myself, so I hope I can get you the answer. It's my first try at setting one of these up, so I hope I've understood all the settings correctly.

(The name of the tournament, "Ficheall Do Thosaitheoirí" means "Chess For Beginners" in Irish; I was trying to think of a name that would stand out.)

Hello, all! Welcome to Ficheall Do Thosaitheoirí, part 1, a daily tournament for players under a 900 rating. I checked the roster last night before turning in and we had twenty-four folks signed up. When I woke up this morning, my first move was waiting for me with two hours off my clock, so it looks like we filled the ranks at about 5am CDT (GMT -5) when the tournament started automatically. I hope that no one is caught by surprise and that you all have time to make your first move.

If you have any questions, please feel free to either post on the tournament's comments or contact me directly. Thank you for joining, and best of luck to all of us!
