Philip the Arab was a Roman emperor of Arab descent who ruled from 244–249 CE. He was born in Auranitis, Arabia, which is now part of Syria.  
 
Background:
    • Philip was a member of a prominent equestrian family.  
       
  • He was the Praetorian prefect when Emperor Gordian III was killed in a mutiny.  
     
  • Philip secretly executed Gordianus, who was at war with Persia.  
     
  • Philip erected a monument to Gordianus on the Euphrates and deified him.  
     
Reign:  
 
  • Philip negotiated peace with the Persian Sassanid Empire.
  • He returned to Rome to be confirmed by the senate.
  • During his reign, Rome celebrated its millennium.
  • Philip was betrayed and killed at the Battle of Verona in 249.
Legacy:
  • Some churchmen in the late 3rd and 4th centuries believed Philip was the first Christian emperor.
