Learning with Svidler

I can't believe that I didn't see him all this time. He constantly plays Grünfeld,Sicilian,Ruy Lopez. My three most favourite openings. His style is amazing and he is one of the highest rated GMs in the world.

I think it is time for me to put some work into his games! This is one of the first games in his page in chessgames.com. Shows what a strong player he will be when he was just 13.

Right!! 15.a4 Qxb2 16.Nxd7 does look solid, good point :)

Svidler is one of my favourite players

    It looks like white has to play a4 before taking the bishop in your line 14.Nc5 Qxb5 15.Nxd7? (15.a4 Qxb2 16.Nxd7 Rfc8 17.Rb1 Qa3 18.Rxb7 Qd6 for example) Nxd4! attacking the knight and winning a pawn 16.exd4 (16.Nxf8 Ne2+ 17.Kh1 Nxc1 18.Nxe6 fxe6 19.Qxc1 Bxb2) Qxd7.

I especially chose him because he plays Grünfeld a lot, as his main opening against d4. Most players use KID and use Grünfeld 1/5 times or something. Plus, he is great at Sicilian! I think I will continue studying his games :)

Good game by Svidler converting the central passed pawn to a rook-pawn scenario and drawing where he is a pawn down.

His repertoire is not to my taste, but if you were to study his games and learn his ideas you would certainly not be the first (nor the last) person to model their play on a good grandmaster of the game. Ruy / Sicilian / Grunfield works for him and is a common enough repertoire.
