I own Comprehensive Chess Endings and I agree it's an excellent at what it aims to be, a comprehensive endgame reference much like an encyclopedia. Of course, first invest in books that teach you to play the endgame like Silman, Seirawan, or Pandolfini.

I fully recommend COMPREHENSIVE CHESS ENDINGS CDCONVEKTA AVERBAKH For completeness and explanations it can't be beat. I use it a lot.
