The red set
Romanian Chess Set Revisited

beautiful set! I love those knights! At first glance they look like Spanish knights but the carving is more stylized, giving them an aggressive look, and more consistency between the pieces. The slightly more detailed Spanish knights miss the mark to me.

Thanks mcostan, your points in relation to the Spanish Knights are well taken

Yeah, that's hot. What board would you all recommend for the Red and White pieces. I love Romanian and Spanish sets.

Thanks Chicken Monster, I think a board with 2 1/4" squares works best for me. Maybe Chuck can offer his opinion on this too.

That's a good size. 2.375" squares also work well. I like the red pieces with a black and natural board, especially one with a red delimiter. Here's the set on a 2.25" board.

Some more on the same 2.25" square board. It has a red delimiter that may appear in some of the pics.

Here's the set on a 2.375" square black and maple Rechapedos Ferrer board on which I painted an red delimiter.

beautiful sets, but i don't understand why the bishops (and i think queen in some cases, not these sets per se) have the opposite color at the top of the piece. i don't care for it, but there must be more than decorative reason for it. i've seen several sets that i would own if not for this distinguishment. thanks

I noted the similarity on another thread. As Arlindo pointed out, the contemporary Spanish knight is something of a degraded version of the original. I still like them. The original is on the right. Reminds me of the Lardy knight.

Like Cgrau (Chuck) in his post, the Romanian set is one of my favorites. Here's the link to his post:

Great thread, Mike! Thanks for all the terriffic shots of this fascinating set. Romanomania!

It's common among Eastern European sets. It's typically seen with bishops that lack the miter cut. I believe it's done to readily distinguish the secularized bishops from the pawns.

Chuck, your Red Romanian looks great on your black and natural square board. And thanks for the additional pics
