some books on the nimzo defense suggest 2...d6 followed by Nf6 and g6 transposing to a classical pirc when black has avoided the most testing lines such as the 150 attack, the austrian attack and the 4 Bg5 line. If you're looking for a safe and sound game, then this is probably the better option, since black really has to prove something in the 2...f5 lines.

I think it's your best chance at getting an interesting opening phase out of the Nimzowitsch. If your opponent dives for the weakened kingside and you're prepared, you might get a good game out of it. If your opponent takes what you give him and exploits the kingside weakness for the longterm, you'll be in for a tough game.
In the Nimzowitsch defense, in answer to whites 2.nf3, is f5 a good reply? I heard from some masters that it helps you to be creative. Is f5 worth exposing king?
