Doctor

I must confess I am a sucker for the Alekhine Defence or Reti if you're playing white.

Caro Kann!!!!! so so so so good....

As white I like to play Queen pawn. When I have the black pieces I enjoy the French, KID, or Najdorf depending upon my opponents play.

UnikeIt

Danish Gambit as white and Sicilian Najdorf as black.

My favourite openings but doesn't mean I play them a lot.

Bishop's opening, Grand prix Attack and the King's Indian Attack as white, The Petroff and Chebanenko Slav as black (for 1.e4 and 1. d4, respectively) . The rest of white's first moves, I play 1...d6

The Nimzo-Larsen attack. Cool

I really got into the English with a kingside fianchetto recently. But still I'm in love with the Ruy Lopez and I love playing the French and KID as black.

Queen's Gambit as white. French Defense as black.

The french defense. It is one of the most controversial openings, with many amateurs either loving it or hating it, and always trying to find refutations, yet it's still alive. Black gets a closed but flexible game, and it can turn out to be very tactical or very positional, and anything in between. He can for example open the center with ...dxe4 or maintain it. He has a lot of options. I also like the fact that he almost always has a solid central structure (he usually never loses his e6 d5 pawn chain, while white's is much less stable). This can make it harder for white to attack even though he has more space if his center is under potential pressure, while black can often be free to play on the queenside because he has no weaknesses.

So for an imbalanced, closed game (and it can be extremely dynamic too, but not always, and that's what makes it so flexible), that is why I like the french so much. It's also fun to frustrate aggressive white players with it. People may think GM's have refuted it, but I recently just realized how little analysis it gets compared to say the sicilian. There are still many insufficiently explored lines in the macutcheon and winawer variations for example to make a 100% correct assesment of them.

These days I've been finding the Najdorf pretty fascinating, as well as the Petrosian King's Indian.

Mendyal

As white for me it's the KG and as Black the French.

ozzie_c_cobblepot

My favorite opening is the Caro-Kann.
