"The Germans have a term for what you're feeling: Weltschmerz. It means the depression that arises from comparing the world as it is to a hypothetical, idealised world."

I think (from the little I German  remember) that literally translates to "world sorrow"

Weltschmerzschach has quite a snappy ring to it - and it encapsulates the pain some players experience when their opponents go on vacation during a (turn-based chess) game.

Chess is chess. It can be played at many time controls: bullet or lightning, blitz, rapid, standard, or correspondence. The last implies speed of moves as much as method of transmission.

Every web site and online chess server where I have played uses "standard" for both rapid and standard, but there are slow chess groups at some of these who advocate something close to standard time controls in the online environment. Long before chess.com came onto the scene and quickly grew into the most popular online playing site, ICC, too, had correspondence chess. What do you think they call it?

Better call it "Offline chess" because you dont need to be online while your opponent moves :)

Should  I worry that this makes sense to me?

Hmmm... "universal" ....  time-flexible .... the moves travel at the speed of light .... I can play it with my son and with my son-in-law, since we live in different cities .... play with friends or relations .... I've Got it! "Relativity Chess!"

How about "Off-The-Hook Chess"

"At your leisure chess"

'Leisure Chess'  is the idea I had too - it conveys the unhurried, more thoughtful nature of correspondence chess & the word is shorter as well !

If there was a perfect word for this, we'd have found it by now.

That sounds like a good name, however, I'm afraid this forum (topic) has been abandoned or foreclosed on by the op.

Being somewhat of a stickler for detail I feel that I must update the translation of Weltschmerz. According to my trusty old Langenscheidt Standard Dictionary the word Weltschmertz means World-weariness.

As for the name of on-line Chess I would suggest something simple such as OLC.

World-weary Chess...I like it!
