feature request

I have a request for a feature that believe would greatly enhance chess.com groups (or at least those that have a specific purpose).

Can a "link" page be created along the same style as the "download" page - one that can be categorized and in which members of a particular group can post links (and only post links) along with a brief description?

Thanks.

I wish to add that such links should be set upon moderator aproval. Not everyone has good intentions. Making that feature a premium only would help to reduce at maximum the posibility of porn/malware linking, given that the user would have to hijack a credit card in order to escape prosecution of the law, and there are much easier ways for spam.

how about the administrators could monitor them , because the non-paying members(me) have some good links also Wink

batgirl

The group founder/leader/administrator and those he empowers would have the god-like powers to allow/edit/delete any supplied link and/or description.  I would think that would be sufficient. Micromanaging is seldom effective, at least in my own experience.

erik

batgirl - this sounds interesting. can you be more specific? i'm not sure that i follow that well. you mean like a link directory?

batgirl

Yes. A page for each group in which the group leader or whomever could  establish headings pertinent to that group under which members could post relevant links with a brief descripion (this should be limited to  x number of words).  There should be no place, other than the brief description, for text to muddle the page.

erik

pardon me for being dense, but you want this on a GROUP level? what about just using the NEWS feature for now? you can keep that updated through editing? or maybe you can use that to show me what you mean? sorry - i'm slow to grasp things sometimes :(

batgirl

"pardon me for being dense"

No problem.

Yes, this is for Goups, but could also be applied to each individual's profile page or blog page.

The NEWS feature allows for people to write. That won't work at all, or at least no differently that a regualr posting.

A links page must be free of clutter to make it viable. Therefore the capability of writing must be extremely curtailed to a very brief description of the site being linked to.

I can think of several work-arounds, but none so efficient, practical and likely-to-be-used as a separate page that allows for members to add links without hassle.

yeah, I guess so that you can have links relevant to the groups, like

for the welsh chess group, a link to the wcu website

for the open discussion, links to nutty american far right websites

for the dream team, links to shops selling alarm clocks, and to bed manufacturers

for the minor masters, the gary glitter homepage...

and for the Chess History Group (which now boasts 67 members and is growing daily), dozens and dozens of categories with links to 100s, possible 1000s sites of various points of interest.

Any ideas for Light Force batgirl ?

batgirl

"Any ideas for Light Force"

Yes.  Define your purpose and create a mission statement or a statement of purpose.  Know where you are, where you want to be and do whatever it takes to get there.

erik

something like: http://www.dmoz.org/Games/Video_Games/Recreation/Board_Games/Chess/Programming/ ?

erik

who would be able to add / manage / edit links?

batgirl

Really, I was thinking of something more along these lines:  http://www.chess.com/downloads

I think having categories would be eminently beneficial, particularly for those groups whose links will number in the 100s.

The founder/leader have the ultimate power to add/edit/delete/manage links. He could also empower others with some or all those abilities.  Actually, I think everyone should be allowed to provide links, but the links should go into a queue which would be reviewed by the leader, or someone he empowers, who would allow, categorize or delete the contribution.  This would help avoid spamming and all the leader to keep his group on course.

erik

ok. this isn't going to happen too soon, but i understand. i recommend keeping them in a group news article until we get to it.

batgirl

OK.
I understand thoroughly.

Thanks!!

Great idea! Similar to wikipedia (I think), only with lots of related links... nice!
