Hiding online status...?

Sort:
KnightNotHorse

Hi...is there a way we can hide our online status?  Or maybe add that to the list of things to check out?  I only suggest this because I like to log in and look around, and might not make a move right away (work doesn't like that, but logging in doesn't violate the rules), but I wouldn't want my opponent to see me online and wonder why I am not moving...

i see. i don't think it is a big deal for you to be online and not moving. does anyone else feel like it is? :)

you can come online and see your games WITHOUT being logged in. i'm not sure about this. thoughts??

most places allow you to be seen or unseen. shrug.

Yeah, certainly no biggie at all...just didn't know if other people cared/didn't care about something like this...

I think such an option (hide/reveal online status) is definitely a necessity for such a large community. I consider chess com not only as a chess site, but also as a social site.

Well, if you're not moving in any of your games...I don't think the opponent can be irritated with you for signing in.

I don't know how hard or easy it is to implement this feature.

On ICC, I sorta like how you know exactly what another player is doing so you don't interrupt them if they are "examining a game" or "studying chess mentor" "doing tactics trainer", etc.

gordonyoung

you can be logged in but not playing games.Looking at chess mentor or tactics

trainer for instance.

only time I gets aerated about it is when I see someone constantly comin' online an' he got our games 'on vacation' - I think that is taking the mickey Smile

Download Chess.com Mobile Chess and playing from your smartphone you will not show up as on line(you are now a ghost playing chess) bot honest it works.

I have to agree with this one - there are sometimes when you dont want people to know you are online - regardless of playing games.

Consider it more of a privacy issue than a social issue though.

  I would like to have the option.  But if it never happens,  oh well.

So would I, cuz sometimes,I leave my computer on whist being logged on here ( whilst doing something else )or I forget to log off when AFC ( away from computer )  n' people send me messages asking why I seem to be always online .....

I think quite a number of other sites hv this Option.

I don't know how hard it'd be to code this, but how about having different statuses for when you're on different parts of the site? The status would change according to where one is, and it'd be possible to set it to "invisible" through the login name on the top of the page, somewhat like GTalk or Messenger.

I don't think it should be too specific. Just throwing some ideas out there:

- Training: Chess Mentor, Tatics Trainer, Videos, etc.;

- Reading: Forums, Articles, Blogs, etc.;

- Playing: Online Chess, Live Chess, Vote Chess, etc.

- Away: inactive for n minutes or more;

- Invisible.

Someone can come up with better names or better groupings, but I think that overall this is not a bad idea.

Currently, you are invisible if you access chess.com from a mobile phone.

The lag in updating the new statuses you propose would make them even more misleading and contentious than the existing scheme. (Plus it would make the site run more slowly.)

The feature of appearing to be offline excites great controversy between those who regard it as a blessing - and those who regard it as an abomination.

Hello. Any update on this? How to hide online status? I tried to look around the settings but it looks like this feature is still not available. I sent feedback to chess.com to have this feature.

That's not something that is currently available.
