Training Methods

Does anyone have any methods of training that they are willing to share?

Depends on what you are trying to achieve.  Im a USCF A player, and my main goal is to have fun.  My study program is the following:

Tactics - 5 at a time.  Once i run across 3 i dont know, i thouroughly study those 3.

Middlegame - I am currently going through Chess Training for Post-beginners: A Basic Course in Positional Understanding

Srokovski, Yaroslav

Endgame -

Some suggestions here https://chesslessonsfree.wordpress.com/

Do lots of "basic" tactics.

Read lots of annotated games.

Play lots of games.

Analyze my games.

I'm weaker than you (lol) but here is the mine (that I'm using since december):

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: Games against slightly stronger engines on 30/5 time control (Lucas Chess, Elo-Tourney section) and analysis in case of loss

Wednesday: Endgame study with lucas chess (1 hour)

Weekend: Guess-the-move exercise

Also, everyday I do 30 tactical puzzles (10 easy, 10 medium and 10 hard on chesstempo)

- Play as many slow OTB games as I can.

- Analyze & Annotate each of those games.

- Do at least 10 online (mainly CT) tactics every day (except when I have an OTB game). I usually do some endgame problems on there as well.

- Do some exercises in the step method (Finished 5, working on the extra books and then step-6) & Yusupov's series (In the second book right now).

- Openings: I prepare during tournaments. I don't do much opening work outside of that.

- Middlegame: I have some good books but to be honest I hardly work on them, instead putting the focus on exercises.

Played my first OTB tournament last summer and got a 1700 Dutch rating (which is slightly deflated compared to FIDE) and when all my current games are processed I should be over 1850.

Step 6 is much harder than Step 5. It should be up to 2000 at least.

I feel something important is missing from this discussion == learning endgame tactics.  I suggest at least the first four chapters of "Silman's Complete Endgame Course."

I have learned that endgame study is important not only in the endgame, but it is used in the late middlegame.  What kind of pawn structure should I be working on, how do I decide what pieces to trade to lead to a strong endgame.

I remember playing a stronger player (1900), and he had a winning endgame.  But he did not understand  the basic concept of King and Pawn play -- using opposition.  With one "mysterious" move, I was able to change a lost game to a draw.

Just learn King + Pawn, and Rook endgame tactics which are enough for the majority of endgames.  It does not take alot of time to learn the basic ideas and Silman is a masterful teacher.

Steps 5 and 6 have a lot of endgames in them.

Yes, the Yusupov series has been recommended to me before.

Chessmeister 9001,

I agree with the first part of cdowis 75 advise silmans complete endgame course is a great book and well worth a look. Also from playing you once in league game i notice you struggle with time and don't give yourself enough time for the ending. Also most players have a prefered ending so select your openings carefully to get to your prefered ending.
