pwning a n00b

Chess usually is realatively boring to watch and it is really hard to make exciting annotations of games played by experts.

Luckily it just happened to me that I, who is around 1200 got a complete beginner as opponent.

So we got a game that is much more spectacular than those boring drawish pro-games!

Well, here it is, fully annotated!

Edit: Damn, I misannotated. All the annotations are supposed to be after the moves, not before. :(

The annotations seem so amateurish.

They indeed are!

You know what's the best way to tell if someone is a n00b in chess? Their arrogance and great sense of satisfaction with the moves they make. The more you learn, the more you'll realize you suck at chess and have so much room for improvement. Then you slowly start learning to become humble and respectful.

cant argue with that....

DefinitelyNotGM

In chess they're called patzers, noobs are in online gaming

The point of this is mostly to show that chess on lower levels, at least for me, is much more interesting to watch than high-level chess for the simple reason that you can see things happening.

Normally either me or my opponents resign when they go down a piece or the game is decided in the endgame by who manages to promote first.

In higher level chess it goes so far that an amateur doesn't even know why they stop playing and can't even tell who won or if it is a draw if noone tells him.

I don't know who knows "Bronze league heros", it's a youtube-show where the worst Starcraft2-players are shown. And I have to say it's much more exciting than watching pro-starcraft 2 because the weirdest and most unexpected things happen in those games.

If chess had something similar I would watch it. But in order to enjoy watching pro-chess games, I feel you have to be pro yourself and that's why it's not really popular to watch.

I can't tell what's happening in amateur games. They seem as though neither side puts much thought into it. Just "There goes my queen, don't worry, he'll return the favour."  I find the games where everything comes together at a high level beautiful.

When you say 1700 or higher is it OTB or chess.com?

Cause my OTB is 1950 but my chess.com is 1600.

well 1700 chess.com rating...

by the way, I am also way better at OTB than my chess.com rating suggests...

it might be that until recently I have only played live chess on chess.com and I dont take them as serously as a tourny game... (I have won a couple)

in OTB my avarage rating is 1500-1600 so I might pose a little bit of a challenge to you =)

(i hope...)

Read Chirnov's Logical Chess Move by Move and Silman's Endgame Course.

I quite enjoyed the annotations. I think that the longer you play and more experienced you get, the more you will appreciate higher level games.

I think you are one of the few who didn't misinterprete the intention of this thread.

This could have easily been possible for more people had they not just read the thread-title (which of course was chosen like that to raise attention) but also the post I made, where I explained it.

The point was not to make fun of the guy I played against but to show, that at least in my lowly beginner-world "watching" a game like this is much more exciting because there's actually stuff going on.

The reason for me thinking that way could very well be what you said:

My lack of understanding makes higher-level games boring to watch for me. It's like they build up, exchange everything off the board and then it's either drawn or one guy will get a pawn through and win.

I also think that anyone who isn't or wasn't an active player and who barely knows the rules would never be able to tell apart if a game was played by 1400s, 2000s, Grandmasters, The World-Champion or chess-engines.
