1. Look for a good move then find a better one.

2. Ask the question, am I leaving a piece hanging?

3. When making a move, try to figure what possible options your opponent will respond with.

4.  Try to anticpate what your opponents game plan is before you make your move.

5.  Try to plan 4 or 5 moves ahead.  Really great players plan many more than that.

Don't bring your queen out early without a good reason.  You'll waste time moving it to safety while your opponent continues developing his pieces and gaining space.

Very true.  I notice that the most with new players.  You need to have a good reason to move the queen out.

Do not throw your Queen at your opponent  !!

Xardak

Don't play chess in a burning building.

Scarblac

Don't play lazy moves without thinking just because your opponent is 500 points lower; don't defend passively or attack recklessly just because your opponent is 500 points higher. Don't keep looking for the mating attack that isn't there, just because you feel you should beat a player because of his rating.

Play the position, not the player, and definitely not his rating.

DHodak

Don't ever neglect your girlfriend or wife because of chess.

TeslasLightning

Oh man, if i had only heard that years ago......
