Ah yes, thank God once again for research!

I think there are lots of posts and all the points were covered - but I cannot help but think that of all the factors one that is passed over but I think one that is more important and has the most impact on any one reaching for the top - - is " time in history " - - like before the internet and computer - you had to be lucky to live near a chess expert or rich to hire one to come to you -  if you lived in Antarctica you were out of luck

- now you could be on a desert island and provided you had a computer and the internet - you could have access to world class chess instruction

- in the past one would play people who did not know much chess and when some one ( I never ) had to play a great player they could research their game and study up on the opponents openings and such

- now all players have access to the internet and world class instruction

- so the pool of rating better better best great players is bigger now than it was in the past

- that typed - I am glad bobby fischer was able to defend the western world way back when ( bobby fischer - I think did the Jessie Owens thing on the chess board )

People have had access to paint, and musical instruments all through history, yet we're not all top musicians, or artists.

Chess ratings and titles are a measure of relative strength, not absolute strength. More access to chess material does not make it easier to become a "good" player, it makes it much harder.

Think about it: there's no measure of chess skill that is irrespective of other people's skills. Internet is bringing chess to a whole new level.

Big time maybe. Gotta have a driver's license!

And not have a drooling problem.

I thought it was about learning the process of the principles.
