Deep Rybka 4.1 -- 100-game Match

Sort:
WhereDoesTheHorseGo

After 70 rounds, Houdini leads by a score of 36.5 - 33.5 (18 wins, 15 losses, 37 draws).

Houdini kicked Rybka's @ss in a Sicilian: Accelerated Dragon. See game 70.

After 80 rounds, it's all tied up! 19 wins, 19 losses, and 42 draws each.

Once again, I'll say that it looks like Rybka understands closed and semi-closed positions better. Rybka won both sides of the Pirc defense in games 87 and 88.

Edit: Now that I look at Houdini's wins and losses, my theory might not be solid. Houdini has also won both sides of closed positions. It is interesting to see which ones it does better with, however.

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

After 90 rounds, Rybka leads Houdini with a score of 47 - 43 (24 wins, 20 losses, 46 draws).

Not a lot of posts, but I appreciate the updates.  It's interesting how Rybka started out behind but has since taken the lead and kept it.

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

In game 91, which is being played as I type this, Rybka is losing with the white side of an Evan's Gambit. I wonder how Houdini will do as White with that position in game 92?

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

Houdini: Master of the gambit. Wins as White and Black in the Evans in games 91 and 92. Interesting!

Interesting!

With 8 rounds left rybka leads by 2 but has lost the last 2 games.

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

Well, no matter what happens in games 99 and 100 (QGD: Tartakower, Main line), Rybka wins the 100-game match: After 98 rounds, it's leading by 3 points.

Rybka Prevails !!!!!!!!

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

Even if you only count the last 50 games--those were the ones where each played Black and White in the same opening--Rybka is still ahead by 3 points (as of 98 games). I have to admit, I thought Houdini would win this match easily.

WhereDoesTheHorseGo

Houdini won round 99, so Rybka is ahead only 2 games. Game 100 is being played right now, and it is even so far.

Houdini has won quite a few of the most recent games.... is that after tuning the engine?

chessmaster102

no hooudini is simply better in more positional positions and rybka is simply better at open and the most reccent games have been openings that genereally lead to positional/closed positions and if Rybka(human) version is being used that s a little worse since rybka will try for wins in drawn positions which could succed but fail most the time.

You've jumped into the middle of a conversation that has spilled over from another of the OP's threads. ivoryknight71 understands my question.

I already know about your discussion with ivoryknight about adjusting a few setting for making houdini run better on the pc and I did use you guyssettings (set mines to 12) and had a little 3 game match between the engines in which Rybka still won.

Interesting, on my machine Rybka hardly gets a look in, when they play. I have all variants of Rybka 4 but I never use it because I think Houdini is just a bit better.

Maybe hardware plays a part in relative (comparative) playing strengths.... Rybka better on some machines, Houdini better on others.

chessmaster102

that is a strong possibility cause it just so happens the space on a PC can affect it's performance.

no, like a scientist, i changed nothing about the engines, etc., during the 100 games.

please help me understand this. i am *not* saying you are wrong. i just don't fully understand how this is possible, nor what you mean by "space". thanks.

as far as i know, engines only care about a few things: crunching power (speed of each processor and number of cores), time to crunch, and enough RAM for caching the variations. if you're talking about hard drive "space", then i'm curious to know more.
