Your in luck Pulp;  The OP for chess in prison created this thread;  http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/one-move-chess-could-do-without   That's why he couldn't join the NAVY. He didn't understand "en passant",  like ships that are en passant in the night.Smile

I bet he has made good friends there.

how do you do this when playing. I have had folks enpasse but do not know how to actually take advantage of this when playing games on chess. com ty in advance

If you need to ask you shouldn't be wasting your and other people's time playing chess.   Sign up for a remedial class on how to use the internet.  If you pass the course, give tic-tac-toe a try.

That's pretty condescending. Maybe you should re-examine your own perspective on what the internet is, because it is mainly about people. You never know who you are speaking to. The high interest in a thread like this warrants a more helpful and uplifting attitude.

Final diagnosis:

You may lack sunlight.

Take some vitamin d and limit mental masturbation to twice daily.

Have a nice day.

To better understand this rule is useful to take account it was implemented when pawns adquired the ability of moving two squares forward in their first move.

To better understand this rule, simply read the first post in this thread, by the person who started it and titled it and explained it RATHER WELL.

@OleanderBlue

I appreciate the intended kindness (towards the OP) in your reply to me.  It speaks well of you as a person.  Certainly better than my snarky comment.

Now and then I get fed up to the gills by what seems to me to be lazy neediness by people.   In his profile the person in question crows about his past heroics in beating a player after consulting a book on chess.  It seems slightly over self-aggrandizing but even if not, the guy was born in 1947 making him 68 years old give or take a few months.  If in all these years he is still ignorant about en passant then something isn't right.

Wow, sephdemtl! How much time without doing it?! :D

I don't think the computer will let you make an illegal move. So it's not possible to "cheat" by moving en passant. just turn off chat

Another interesting rule: When castling the king must be moved before the rook. At a chess club an opponent intended to move only the rook instead of castling but then changed his mind and moved the king after moving the rook. This is called cheating. He had to take the move back.

Correction (?)

: When castling the king must be touched before the rook.

why does everyone judge people's mental acuity in relation to their knowledge of chess as a game and / or its history?

People's mental abilities and their explanation as to how or why their life or chess history didn't bring about the specific knowledge they are INQUIRING about have NOTHING to do with eachother. No relation.

I find it really lame.

The nice thing I can compare chess players to is backgammon players. I play on play64 and so many players have no honour on there. They bail or make time-wasting moves if they don't get any strategy that isn't about playing it safe.

Should I impugn the intellect of all bg players as a whole?

Lots of great players too who play you for hours.

To be crude as is my wont when getting tired of petty self-importance masquerading as high-minded sophistication...

Who gives a shit?

Some people know about en passant and are fortunate if they found someone kind to explain it or had the curiosity to read up on it, and some people didn't.

They found some dudes on a tiffy thread trashing eachother and forgot that this is pointless.

Nihilistically yours,

Seph

Ranting ~ just another form of self-gratification.  Almost all people seek attention.   Forums are a filter that concentrates the demographic of people who do it a particular manner.  (e.g.  ask yourself what percentage of all the people in your life actually hang out in forums.  In my case only a tiny percentage of those I know do it.)

En-passnt pawn captures are not cheating and those who accuse opponent of cheating when they capture En-passant are just kidding themselves, Chess.com will not punish anyone from. Using the pawn capture En-passant or listen to such accusations against anyone who is following a legal move in chess that's been set in stone for thousands of years, I would suggest players learn to live with En-passant it's not going to change, good advice from bad accusations from players is simply either block them or turn off your chat problem solved!👍👏
