is it a sport or no?

OK, i'm sure this has been done before, but it's something fun to debate.

Is chess a sport?

Simply write what you think, but reasoning makes it more fun.  But remember to respect others opinions respectfully.

I myself think that it is NOT a sport, but an activity.  I say this because, due to the Webster dictionary: unabridged, there is nothing that describes chess in there.

Your turn guys.

Chess is a mind sport, not a physical sport.  Also to add, chess is the ultimate game involving little to no luck.  No other game compares.

couldn't that depend on the definition of luck though, some people may argue that luck can have everything to do in chess too.  but i do like your arguement and agree with it being a great mind sport.

carpman

No, it is not a sport. I wish it were, then I could tell my doctor how active I am and he would be pleased.

Luck is when you get great cards at random, to win a game or bet.  Chess, the only thing you can debate is when a player will miss your blunder.  Is that luck though, or isn't that just a intellectual error?

 A sport isn't always physical.

slack

Chess is the ultimate sport, in my opinion. Players start every game equal and win by exploiting the mistakes of their opponent.

First off, Anthony, it's just as good having another one, not everyone (especially me) go off looking at all of the forums, so if it's something you don't wanna contribute to, that's fine.  Rofl carpman.  Then socket, couldn't it be argued as well that luck and an intellectual error can be interchangible?  And finally slack, actually, i think that it is said that white has the advantage in a game for the decide openings for both sides and hold the momentum and rhtyhm (love this word) to begin with.  I may be wrong, but that is what i have heard.

Well, somebody has to go first. Tongue out

The way I learned it, white's first move 'disturbs the equilibrium' of the chess match, and black restores it. And there are many ways to play an equal game without making copy-cat moves.

So just because black goes second does not automatically mean he is at a disadvantage.

hmm, i guess that that is just the way you were taught, i can see that though, interesting view

I believe is both, is just a game for fun, but is also can be serious as in the tourament so is a (mind) sport.

J_Piper

It's like a fight, most people wouldn't strike unless struck upon, hence white vs. black debate.  Therefore, how powerful is it that white moves first.  Every chess player knows that the first to strike isn't always successful.

There has been no original thought for ANYONE.  Someone has always thought of SOMETHING by another person.  Get it?

boglin

Fishing is a sport? Foot in mouth

Bdsr

can anyone think of a non-physical sport? maybe we could compare it to chess

J_Piper

My life has been filled with "sports."  However, chess is a complete mental process sport.  Every physical sport would agree that most in competing is the mental aspect of it.  Chess, you will never find a better mental game with no excuses.  (although many here complain that someone is cheating, instead of their own error)

Fishing as every fisherman knows, ITS LUCK when you get fish or not.  You'd probably argue it's all about finding the right fishing SPOT. =)

falling-upwards

fishing is also planning, researching the area to find where which fish is, which type of bait to use, when to go, how deep to put it, etc.  So while there is luck in that, you can't say that's all there is in fishing
