Is my oppenent allowed to throw salt at me?

Hey all,

The title may sound a little strange, but I'm having a serious problem.

Every time I play live chess, particularly Bullet and Blitz, a weird sound happens towards the end of my game. The sound is obviously the sprinkling of salt.

Since I did nothing to "throw salt" my conclusion is that my opponent did it. Why? It is an obvious attempt to distract me and make me panic. (It often works)

So in conclusion, Should my opponent be allowed to throw salt at me?

I think it's unfair, if you agree please help me raise awareness to this problem.

I hear the same thing. I don't think it's fair eighter.

When you are low on time- you have ten seconds- the computer makes "the sound" so you are aware of your time. I don't tend to like it since it makes me nervous about time pressure.

OH! The computer is throwing salt at me? You expect me to believe that?! Why would the computer do something so unfair?  Even if it was true, it doesn't thow any at my opponent! I think you're confused...

I can't find anything against it in the USCF rule book so... apparently not.  However, it may fall under "annoying conduct".  Everytime someone twists pieces I'll inform the arbiter since that's really annoying.  Seriously, it isn't good for the felt.

I have a much more fun way of dealing with that.

Say J'adoube, and untwist them.

Should I email FIDE, USCF and Chess.com or should we do it as a group? I mean, if they can do salt online, then why not sand or worse OTB? Where is the line? STOP THE MADNESS!

ChezBoy

Sure.

In some cultures, throwing salt is a sign of respect. Or maybe it's coins....

ChezBoy

Email kirsan and kasparov while you're at it.

It's still unacceptable! Some cultures spit on new babies for good fortune, should I visit my opponent and spit on his baby? Of course not. Stop throwing salt then!

Why not what? Spit on his baby? Surely you jest!

Throwing salt is allowed, as I understand it, but only if it is thrown over the shoulder.

It'd be okay with me if it didn't make so much blammed noise!

ChezBoy

Turn your computer volume off.

Protect yourself with a potato. It needs a decent amount of salt, anyway.
