PLEASE VOTE: 30/30, 30/15 or 30/10 in Version 3

Eric..as a former business executive, I certainly appreciate you taking the time to respond to this thread.  Savvy business people make decisons that will please the majority of paying customers.   Why don't you send all premium members an email which can be done with one click of a button asking if they would like a 30 minute time controlled default?   Giving members who prefer 30 minute games only a choice between 15/10 & 45/45 time controlled games is insulting to us.  I used to manage an IT dept and so I know that adding one more time controlled default for 30 minute players takes only few minutes of programing.  You have 7 settings for Blitz and 3 for standard.  And I agree you can't please everyone, so how about pleasing the majority.  Please make sure Daniel Rensch and any other person who has ownership of this site sees this thread.  Thxs

hi. i can see this is really important to you. i appreciate you caring a lot. adding another time control in the backend is easy. adding to the UI is more than a few minutes, and more is not always better. the bigger problem is that it creates additional fragmentation of the STANDARD group. so everyone looking for STANDARD games will now have to wait longer as there are more choices. and STANDARD games are already a tiny, tiny % of games played on chess.com. again, i understand how much this means to you. the decision was not made lightly. i'm sorry that you find it insulting, it's nothing personal. we may revisit in the future. thanks for sharing. 

That's what I was thinking.  The more times they have, the harder it will be to find a game.

And having more time controls makes sense for bigger pools, and I'd guess out of all chess played on chess.com blitz is the biggest.

The issue you raised is why we are advocating to modify the 30min control into 30+15. That solves the problem of fragmentation. It also solves the problem of broken endgames, while adding a negligible amount of time to the control. Are you willing to poll the userbase to see which option they would prefer? Even without polling, I'm willing to bet that you would only gain players with a 30|15 control instead of a 30. I don't see how a 15second increment would upset anyone, but it would certainly please the people who want to play more "real chess" at a moderate time control.

Why not get rid of something not used often and replace with a new time control for standard players?  As mentioned, there are 7 different blitz games and only 3 standard games, and only 2 have time controls 15/10 & 45/45.

We need a 30 minute time control.  The people are speaking up.  Please make sure the owners of chess.com are reading this thread. Thanks

Would it be possible to make a people could set what time controls they would accept for a game? For example, instead of only wanting a 30 0 game, you could make a seek that would accept any of the Standard time controls. That way you could have more options and there would be less of a wait time.

Eric...doesn't having 7 default time controls for blitz cause more fragmantation than adding a 30 time control for standard 30 minute players considering we can only have 3 games to choose from?  We understand this site is geared towards blitz players, than why did you add a 45/45 minute default?  That makes no sense at all.   The groups that want the tournmant 45/45 control can configure and coordinate this default among it's group members. We are talking about a non group player who wants to play a casual game of 30 minute chess with the fun of a time control.

Need to repost due to time differences around the world and get this on top of forum.  Most people never read past the first page just like when searching in Google.  I am trying to reach as many members with lower ratings who already play 30 minute standard games or players wanting to improve their game by slowing down and playing 30 minute games with a small time control which makes the game a tad more fun, especially end games, without making the game too long. I have been told by so many advanced players and coaches to forget about blitz until players at our level 1000-1400 have mastered basic tactics as we need to put much more thought into our moves.  So for all the members on this site who love 30 minute games, we are about to make them even better with a small time control.   If you are a blitz player, kudos for your success because most of you have much higher ratings.  And a BIG thank you because you haven't added any negative comments to this thread which shows everyone you have class and you understand how much work it took to improve your game.  I am speaking up for the weak players who should also be able to choose a default that suites their needs.  We only have 15/10 or 45/45 to choose from.  Why there is not a 30/30, 30/15 or 30/10 makes no sense.  Every 30 minute player I have spoken to says they would DEFINITELY prefer a 30 minute time controled game.  I would be willing to bet that a 30/15 or 30/10 game would become much more popular than the current 30 minute standard. I played 45/45 once and would never play it again because the game lasted too long for my tastes. There needs to be balance and 30 minute games gives us the chance to play more than one game, especially for people who work full time and want to play a couple of games in the evening. So if you are a 30 minute player, PLEASE voice your opinion and tell us what time control you would prefer 30/30, 30/15 or 30/10.

I still vote 30/15 but majority rules.

So, What does 30/15 mean, 30 moves in each 15 minute time control segment, or 30 minutes for all moves with a 15 sec delay for each move, or something else?

30 minutes on the clock, with 15 seconds added per move.

What you guys dont get is that in theory everyone likes the increment but in pratice people do not use it.

If you really want 30|15 then just make it custom.

3|2 is a much better time control then 5|0 and despite that people are using 5|0 twenty times more often.

Just because 30|whatever is better does not mean that people will really use it

@JGambit - I wonder if people don't use it because it's unclear what it means. I went so far as reading the USCF time rules last night and still couldn't figure it out for sure. Now that I know what it means, I'll be more likely to use it (if available).

Eric...sometimes in life business people make mistakes.  Sorry to point out a mistake that I believe chess.com made.  The top business people in the country are the first to admit when they are wrong. If you want to act like a dictatorship, instead of a democracy, you are the owner so do as you please.  Paying members who all requested a 30 time control must not mean much to you.

i'm sorry you feel that way. maybe one day you will know what it's like to be in a position where you have to balance the needs of millions of people, and the pain that comes with disappointing some while pleasing others. at the end of the day you cannot please everyone, because one person's desire becomes another person's discomfort. tweak something to please one person, upset another. try to fix that, upset a 3rd person. i'm always in a no-win situation. i do my best to please as many people as i can. i hate disappointing people, but it's impossible to please everyone. sorry.
