Sloan makes the claims below in his Introduction to the above title, and describes Reti on the backcover as "...the most original player of all time."
Reti is great no doubt -- and there are several players that stand with him as original independent chess thinkers: Nimzowitsch Morphy, Philidor, Lasker all come to mind -- But above all the rest -- My vote goes to Steinitz by a wide margin. The progenitor of positional chess deserves his due.
At least, if you believe Sam Sloan...
Here I am refering to Reti's "Masters of the Chessboard" (New York: Ishi Press, 2008).
Sloan makes the claims below in his Introduction to the above title, and describes Reti on the backcover as "...the most original player of all time."

"The most famous game ever played between two grandmasters." (p.2) :
(Sloan describes the game Morphy vs. The Duke of Brunswick as the most famous game ever played! (p.2))
Next "...one of the most analyzed and studied games in chess history" (p.7) :
"Finally, here is the greatest chess game ever played." (p.8) :
And also by Reti "...the most famous chess endgame study ever composed." (p.4) :
