What supplements do you take?

I use Beta Blockers all the time when playing OTB. It prevents adrenaline from being released and lowers your heart rate allowing you to relax and really play your A game and not slip up due to tension. Lots of performers etc. use it and it really works.

I used to drink coffee as well to keep my mind focused but now I have hit on a very good system. I start drinking pre-workout sport supplements about two weeks before a tournament. They are loaded with caffeine but also tend to make you very energetic ,making it impossible to sit still. However after about  10 days of constant use this effect starts to wear off and you are left with the benefits of the high caffeine content only, keeping you really sharp.

I have a few more aces up my sleeve but I am wondering what other players use before or during an OTB tournament.

I have been there brother ,if you are sad get yourself some 5HTP (hydroxitriptophan) at the pharmacy ,you probably have a seratonin shortage.

Meditation. Does all the things you mentioned (relaxation + full concentration) and much more. You don't have to mess up your brain chemistry for top performance.

Modern supplements are highly sophisticated and does not mess anything up .Top concert performers etc use Beta blockers all the time .Meditation might be good for some but the results are not guarenteed ,plus it takes a lot of time and practice to reach the required level whereas supplements guarentee instant results.

For someone who cares about their results so much that they take drugs, you're not especially good.

I...tell myself to relax. The mind is amazing in regards to the control that it has over everything. With the right mindset, you can calm nerves, control dreams, and even block out pain. No need for supplements or artificial enhancers.

Well actually, you are only rated 1600. Barely a class B, more than likely a class C. Higher than myself, but in the overall picture, a complete novice with some basic understanding of chess. Don't start floating on a cloud, otherwise people such as myself will catch up and surpass you without supplements or enhancements of any kind.

I was actually looking at your blitz, which is a more accurate comparison to OTB ratings.

I'll say it again.

You're not especially good.

By that logic, you aren't all that great yourself :)

Oh and btw, I know I'm not either. So no using that counter-argument ^^

Not to defend anyone but to some extent otb rating and live chess rating are very easy to compare. however if i play live chess here I play a lot of gambit and take a lot of changes to  set up tactics. I wouldn't play this way in a 2 hour game except once there I won in less in moves.

I have a lot of fun playing live chess here because the result doesn't matter.

Really ,you are comparing 3 minute blitz games with lag to OTB ? And again,I am 'only' rated 1600 because I have only played two games so far. All this is beside the point ,I didn't say beta blockers can give me a 2000 rating after two games or will improve blitz ,I said it really helps you play your best in OTB ,something that cannot be compared to online chess in any way.

Look closer. I don't lose to 1300's.

I don't really care what you claim they do, they could give you a 2000 after two games or imrpove your blitz for all I care.

Using drugs to enhance your performance is pathetic.

FonzMcBride

I see the problem now Assault ,you are under the false impression that supplements can enhance one's performance ,which is not what I said . No amount of supplements can make you a better player, help you analyze better ,see more tactics ,but supplements can help you play your best instead of making mistakes just because you are nervous. You seem to have some anger issues and I would like to suggest 5HTP to you as well it really makes you a friendlier person.

No thanks, I don't use drugs to cover for my flaws.
Unlike some.

Good advice pdve but I sounds like Assault won't take any.
