Which way is forward on a bishop

So the common bishop piece has a slot cut into the top: see for example my set (post nr 20 in this thread: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/post-your-sets ).  My question is: does this slot denote the rear of the bishop (as if someone took a circular saw to the back of his head), or the front.

does not matter he can move backwards anyway, and the slot is a piss hole

I always thought the slot was for conveniently stowing letters.

OK great, so I'm gonna start calling my bishops postmen.

Perhaps it's a rudimentary savings bank.
