Why play turn-based?

Why do you play turn-based instead of live chess?

It seems like everybody in the forums has their rating from turn-based.

What is the point of take days to make a move? Why not just play with very long time controls? What is the point of chess w/o time control?

Are there any tournaments for live chess on this website?

Not yet.

Tricklev

I play both, it's just that I get my live chess somewhere else.

For me, I don't always have time for an entire long game in live Chess. I'd rather spend the 10 minutes I have and focus on one or two games, and make the best moves I can. I don't much care for blitz, so the 5|0 game I could play in Live in that same 10 minute time frame doesn't interest me.

I'm in the same boat.  Turn based allows my time commitment to be as flexible as possible plus I play a far better game with the slower time controls and as a result enjoy it much more.

I play live elsewhere, usually in OTB tournaments, but also on another internet site. I like having a couple of correspondence games now and then as a way to play slowly and look up openings in reference books and databases as I play. It gives me a chance to learn more about the openings.

Turn-based chess drew me to this site. I would not be here for live, if I was not already for turn-based. The appeal of turn-based is mutifaceted, including the ability to delve deep into strategy, the opportunity to use databases to hone my opening repertoire while playing, the ease of spending as little as five minutes per day (or eveb every other day), and the quality of the turn-based playing environment here: perhaps the best among the more than one dozen sites at which I have played.

The turn-based chess here is better than other websites for live, but remains far short of server chess (ICC, PLaychess, even FICS) for live blitz. Staring at a computer screen for hours while waiting for an opponent to move stands among the most significant wastes of time I can imagine within my day-to-day activities. For live, I play 1 0 and 3 0 almost exclusively. These time controls also significantly reduce my opponents' capacity to cheat.

It's an interesting question. I like turn-based a lot. I'm a book-learner and teacher by trade, and turn-based is closer to book-learning. It allows me time and resources to try to have ideas in games, without the stress of face-to-face play and the (for me) inevitable blunders. I get pleasure from playing a good game when the computer analysis does its stuff and pats me on the head.

This is all very different from 'real' (OTB) chess, I can see. A bit like the difference between doing well in your Portugese lessons and going to live in Lisbon?

chessoholicalien

Because I suck slightly less at turn-based than live :)

Magnuspym

I don't like playing against the clock. My tactics rating is abysmal. I feel rushed. I prefer to think about moves at my own pace. I'm 44, never going to be a grandmaster, so don't see the problem playing correspondence if that's what I enjoy.

I also perfer Turn Base because in my 1  & only game in 3-0 Blitz I Won the Game but Chess .com can`t explain how I lose by Time on Clock & I had more Time . Therefore, to me in Live Chess the Clock can be Wrong !!!

I play turn-based in addition to live chess.

It seems like everybody in the forums has their rating from turn-based.

The rating shown is the member's highest rating , I believe, so may not always be turn based.

I never actually take days thinking on a move but can if I need to. The longer time spent on moves/games tends to raise the level/quality of the game and thus this is the " point " you ask about, at least for me it is.

CircleSquaredd

I think the turn based here is mainly for the old geezers :)

When I was a nerd, a social out cast, I used to play live chess all the time. Now I have a busy social life, and I just don't have the time for 30 0 games. Turn based is just a way for me to play non-blitz without having to sit at the computer for longer periods at a time.

I came here for the live chess, stayed for the turn-based. My biggest weakness is blunders on time pressure or simply from not bothering to think a move over before playing, so turn-based is a great advantage for me.

Good question, I hate it, so I'm quitting.
