I got one a while ago. I ignored it as I do any such nonsense.

My name is _________, I represent the________National Bunk (it's never spelled right) of______________ (usually some strange place like Abbadaabaa doo allaville). I have a sum of 13.4 billlio dollars I need to get out of the country due to the death of my Great Uncle Fester. Please to help me for I have seven children who all need shoes (I love that part since you would think with 13.4 billio dollars he could afford shoes). The real peachy part of these scams is that most of the countries where they take place have strick laws against smuggling money out of the country. If you fall for the scheme, you could actually get thrown into jail should you ever visit that country and the US Embassy couldn't do a thing about it.

To answer your question, I ssent the man a friend request because I though it was the good chess.com thing to do, to welcome new members. Well I should get my scheme letter soon. Artfizz, this just goes to show that THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS AND ARTFIZZ AND HUGH PATTERSON JUST PAVED THE WHOLE DAMN ROAD!

You would think this would be the one place these amatuer schemesters wouldn't pratice their trade. Of course, my wife does work for the Superior Court and I could pass the yahoo email address on to her?

I wondered whether chess.com rules prohibit the sending of such messages - and whether they routinely ban 'members' who send them. Does this constitute abuse that should be reported through the Report Abuse route?

Hugh_T_Patterson

I think they should be banned, but you have to make sure it's not an established account that's been hijacked. Many social networking pages will terminate new accounts that immediately start spamming, but give established accounts an opportunity to recover their personal pages. I do think this is a definite case of abuse out of the gate. I just figured the person was new and that's was the page was so blank. Well, I feel my IQ has just been lowered to approximately my shoe size!

Any hacker amongst us? I think their websites should be hacked! How dare they insult the intelligence of chess players - among all people!

Hugh_T_Patterson

I would love to and could probably do. HOWEVER, it is not the right way to go about things. We have a system administrator and website people to handle this. Also, I would be engaging in a Federal Offense and my wife works for the courts so I am out of the hacking business these days. Nice thought though. I SAY LET ERIK DEAL WITH IT.

Did you say 13.4 billion dollars? Where can I sign up? hehehehehehe

Hugh_T_Patterson
