EXTREMELY Serious Glitch

HashtagNoob

I realize that I posted this in the wrong forum. It's now in the right one, my apologies.

From my experiences in Live Chess, I found a really weird glitch. Apparently, there's a glitch of some sort such that when I try to use the word "ass" it doesn't let me type it. I don't really understand, I was under the impression that this was a website designed for intelligent, mature adults where a chat filter is of course unnecessary unless whoever made the website is an imbecile who cannot go into public out of fear of hearing "the A word."

Since chess.com is obviously intended for intelligent adults, meaning no web designer would be dull enough to even consider putting in place a chat filter, this must be a glitch that needs to be resolved. If in fact the moderators and creators of this site are in fact just socially-deprived imbeciles who fall out of their chair at the sight of the word "ass," then I believe that is a problem in of itself. The best way to solve that problem would be to find a website intended for our age group, because a website with a chat filter is CLEARLY intended for sheltered children. Best of luck fixing the glitch, I hope I helped by bringing it to your attention!

[Yes- We have a chat filter. We don't allow inappropriate language because we DO have children playing on the site- Mod]

Putting the obvious sarcasm aside:

You are making the assumption that the 20-30+ year old users aren't acting like children. That, sir, is a mighty big assumption.

HashtagNoob

Why does that mean I can't call someone who is letting his clock run down stupid amounts of material "The purest form of ass."? That's just unreasonable. What is the problem with me saying something like that?

mjh1991

I don't think that a chat filter is an unreasonable thing.  You wouldn't spout obsceneties against an opponent in real life over-the-board.  So, why would you want the website to support or perhaps encourage such behavior?  Second, on the internet it is not a safe assumption to assume that all users are adults, there are kids who play chess too (many of which may be quite strong).

As to your latter post, I understand your frustration, but bad behavior on one person's part does not excuse it on your part.  Besides there's nothing stopping from making your complaint known in different words.

finns

would grass also be filtered, as it contains that word?

HashtagNoob

I agree with everything you just said. However, none of it in any way justifies there being a chat filter. In fact, it justifies the opposite. Do they have chat filters in OtB tournaments? None that I've been to of late. So why have it in an online setting?

u can't filter normal speech. Anyone who used such language OTB would be disqualified from the tournament and possibly banned

HashtagNoob

Lol that's not even close to accurate.

KvothDuval

also there is no indication that chess.com is not intended for children...

finns

chesskid is for under 13s. doesn't say anything about over 13s

KvothDuval

that doesnt mean that chess.com is not availible for younger children

hkuang

The internet is a wonderous source of good chess players, games, and cat videos.  There is no reason to exclude 12 year olds like me from chess.com

Casual_Joe

If they want to incorporate a chat filter into their website, then that's a decision they can make.  If you don't like it then you're free to go elsewhere.

sftac

The site's chat filter is a reasonable substitute for the OTB equivalent of a tournament director standing behind your shoulder imo.

Polite language is expected, else you're suspected of trying to distract your opponent -- if that were allowed, it would just escalate.

sftac

KvothDuval

hey sftac!

... (point point point)

lol

You're just proving why the filter is needed, and why "adults" like you need to be treated like children.

Hopefully you get drummed out of here in some apoplexy of nerd rage sooner than later... ;)

TheLastSupper

Imo chat filters only cause annoyance. I mean, if you really want to type such words, usually putting space ' ', dot . or w/e between the letters of the "bad" word, or replace letters as a with @, etc.

Spelbnder

I think the "glitch" is that you can't get your point across without swearing. If you want to do that go out to a ball game or something. Here at chess.com there are certain rules and it makes the site more enjoyable.Had you played at a real tourney would you talk that way?

No, it's clear that there is a glitch in the system, because I do not believe that the makers of this website are socially-retarded imbeciles who would attempt to impose a chat filter on mature adults.

Now you, on the other hand... I'm not so sure.

I'm sorry but a baddie who loses to 1000 elo players on this website has no business commenting on a serious subject that is obviously out of his realm of understanding. You'd be better off playing checkers on a chat-filtered website. Go try to get over 1300 in tactics trainer :]
